mating season over?

Post by mrscrabmadness » Fri Jul 13, 2012 10:15 pm

I had tried to find out the sex of all my crabs cause all the sudden I had one getting picked on after he/ she been in the tank for several months, found that everyone that I could tell was male except one that kept hiding up in the shell and was the one who was getting picked on, I assumed that this crab had to be female. The 2 larger crabs that would " attack" this one would try to ride & flip her/ him , but there was never any loud chirping, just looked really aggressive. I took the crab out of the main tank and iso it. I described what was going on that is when someone said could be mating, I knew it wasn't a shell issue I tried that. I tried several times to put the crab back in the main tank and the same thing happened. I tried putting a molter in with the iso after it came up and had time to re coop & been bathed & this was a few days after to..I did this so it wouldn't be lonesome and the crab went after the molter! it didn't want any crab with it in the tank! well I decided to day I would try again. they have all been in the main tank now since 10 a.m. & it's 10 p.m. and no one is bothering anyone! so the mating season here must be over.
I also put a layer of worm casting with calsi sand mixed in, in their corner caddy..I don't like moss seems like it cause to many issues with bugs and mold

Mating 'season' is usually just when the humidity and heat spike for a long time (from what I've read from the people who have had eggs recently and in the past) I'm not an expert on mating, but if she is laying eggs, the males will go back to her because they want to fertilize them, but the process takes hours, if you include pre and post copulatory gaurding, so you'll have to leave them alone the whole time. If they don't, it was probably something else or maybe a false alarm :? I'm sure some mating experts will have more to say

My crabs, as well as others around the site, are in the process of fertilizing and/or hatching eggs. Since the temperature spike in my crabitat, I've had a lot of crabs that have been in the mating mood; it doesn't look that much like aggressive behavior. Wodesorel just posted a few good videos, check them out here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=88044

All I know is my tank conditions were perfect and as soon I noticed the 2 huge crabs picking on this one I removed it, those vids do look like what they were trying to do to this crab. I tried several times to stick the crab back in the main tank and watch as soon as any monkey business went on I took it back out, so maybe they never got to mate and the season is over, just as with deers and other such animals where it only happens during so many times a yr. I took the crab out before anything could happen and left it out till everyones hormones settled down, cause now everyone is fine & nothing has change in my tank. everything is still the same. guess I will know next yr if it happens again if this is what is going on, I have Illinois crabs ya'll.. nothing normal bout us!
