I have been giving special attention to three crabs for about a month now. The first one was lucky who had accidentally gotten out of his cage and stayed in a box on the floor for six days with no food or water. Luckily the room is humid! Anyway he changed shells and molted after LOTS of feedings of water and honey, etc. He finally molted and has a deformed big pincher but the little one is okay. He is back in regular tank now. There was another who had a bad molt, got in a fight or something...anyway I found him in his shell with no legs so into the ICU he went. I got advice on this site about caring for him and had to hold him to get him to eat, etc. i did this about four or five times a day. When he was through he would push at my finge3r with his big claw b ut never tried to bite me. Then I rescued a crab from a beach store that had no claws/pinchers, just legs. He really was hard to feed but he finally got the idea that i wouldn't hurt him and started eating and drinking really well. NOW they are both little buddies in my hospital tank and have both molted and have the missing body parts restored. I still take the lid off to change water and food , etc. and even though they can feed themselves they come out to my hand to see if I have honey.
If you haven't had this experience and have the time it is soooooo rewarding. My husband wqs not a fan of all of the time I spent in the room with them. He was sure they would die anyway and thought I was being c ruel. Now he is a believer. They are so cute. I will try for pictures. No camera right now. Thank goodness for this website and the advice of others.
