They should always have access to a pool of freshwater and saltwater that they can completely submerge in, make sure that they have a way out.

1. Yes, you should wait until your hermit crab resurfaces. Unless there is anything like a bacterial bloom, do not dig molting hermit crabs out. 2. Remove all the sand. Both of those are harmful. EE and play sand should be the only things you have in your substrate.

Yes, a solid cover will work fine. When you open the lid for food changes and stuff they get enough air flow.
