I think cuttlebone and cuttlefish are the exact same thing.

I don’t have birds and I’ve never used either for my crabs

Cuttlebone is like a backbone of the cuttlefish. I usually toss the entire piece in the tank. When it gets dark or stained from the substrate I just clean it in dechlorinated saltwater and scrub it with a toothbrush.

You can get a box of instant ocean at just about any pet store. Petco, PetSmart, Amazon, Chewy all sell it. A three pound box is enough to do 10 gallons. It is usually priced between $6 & $10. 10 gallons of water compared to two little bottles of the hermit crab water for the same price.
