Ask questions about food not included on lists here!

Post by asiankanye » Thu Apr 30, 2020 9:35 pm

Here's an attempt?
So I had an idea where I would make a topic where people could post questions about if certain foods are safe, and in return, people would answer their question to say if it would be safe or not. So I don't think this is going to work, but here goes nothing.

So I was wondering two things, both of which I half know the answer to. The first thing is whether hermit crabs can have the spiky gumballs of sweetgum trees, as I have a lot of these in my backyard. I'm just a little paranoid that I'll run out of food and I won't be able to order food in time. I think the answer to this is no. The second question I had was if hermit crabs could have quaker's simply granola cereal mix. I feel like they can, but I just need to make sure. It's made from oats, raisins, honey, and almonds. I know that honey is sweet, so I'll feed this sparingly to the hermit crabs if I can feed it. These are the ones I'm talking about:

The gumballs serve as food for wild birds, squirrels, and other wildlife. They don’t have any toxins that I’m aware of so I don’t think they’d be problematic, though I do wonder if the crabs would be able to break the outer hull on their own.

As for the Quaker oats I don’t see any ingredients of concern, so they should be fine in a balanced diet.

They probably can but considering how strong a flavor it has I doubt they’d like it.

Are you confident that no pesticides or herbicides were used where it was from? Clover is safe, but I would be more worried about the possible chemicals.

This is the way I believe I got a baby cricket “jiminy “ who I believe has passed now after 9ish weeks. I threw in stuff from my back yard and all the sudden a tiny cricket appeared. Almost mite size. It grew and chirped all the time. I miss hearing the chirp.

my mom made some boiled lobster today, and she only put in a little bit of salt on it before boiling. I saved some exo and put it in a bag and popped it into my freezer. do i need to wag it really well to get the salt off or should it be fine? lobster was yummy too lol, table salt was used

The exo won’t absorb much from the water. If you’re worried about anti-caking agents a quick rinse will do the trick.

I love to eat dried coconut and I found that you could feed it to crabs. I looked at the ingredients and all it said was coconut and sea salt. Is that safe? The brand is called “dang coconut chips” if that helps.

it looks like it has cane sugar and sea salt in it. i’m not sure about the sea salt, but cane sugar is bad for hermit crabs if you give them a lot of it in the form of food like this. but i’m not completely sure

so i believe that things like azomite and greensand are safe for hermit crabs, and both of these are also used as fertilizer. is it safe to buy these in bulk from gardening websites? i also found both in bulk quantities for free shipping on ebay. is this safe though?
