Branches for Tank

Post by cats_n_crabs » Mon Sep 07, 2020 5:32 pm

I am trying to upgrade a crabitat that was my daughter's. She moved across the country and I "inherited" her 2 hermit crabs. What I want to know, is do I need to do anything to branches or pine cones that I collect before I put them in the crabitat? I know that for my parrot, I need to bake them to kill off bugs and fungus. Is it the same for crabs?
Thank you.

I'd suggest doing the same as well just in case. Be wary of the type of brnaches you collected, some can cause issues in a sealed environment.

If your yard isn't sprayed with pesticides and fertilizers, and your city/county doesn't spray for mosquitoes (you would have to call), you can use branches from safe wood in your backyard (Oak, Sweetgum, Maple) for hermit crabs to climb on. You would want to bake the branches to kill any bugs.

Edit: If you use pine cones, I don't recommend new ones. Only use opened brown ones that don't have sap on them.
