Tiny Crab Naked :(

Post by 22pony22 » Fri May 15, 2020 6:55 am

Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
I use Zoo Med Repti Sand Desert White (the all natural on) and Zoo Med Echo Earth. It is the required depth of 6 inches

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
yes, they are located in the center of the tank and yesterday they were reading 80.0 for the temperature and 84% for humidity.

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
4 Zoo med Repti therm heaters

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
I use Thrive water dechlorinater and the same for Salt. I also have used Zoo Med Hermit crab conditioners. I do have instant ocean and Prime as well that I hope to start using soon.

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
I feed them: Zilla Fruit Mix, Zilla Omnivore Mix, Zilla Fruit and Veggie mix, Zoo Med Flower Blend, Thrive Pellets, Zoo Med Pellets, Fluker Mealworms, Fluker Grasshoppers, Zoo Med Red Shrimp, Fluker Crickets, Fluker Solider Worms, Fluker River Shrimp, Pure-bites dog and cat treats, Zoo Med Fruit Salad, Omega One Brine Shrimp, Zoo med Peanut Crunch, Omega One Blood Worms, and Fluker treats Blueberry and Strawberries

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
I have had the crab since March 15 and It is Purple Pincher

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
Yes, March 18 to April 22

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
10 Gallon Tank, Screen Lid Wrapped in Packing tape

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
This crab and one other

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
There's extra shells in the tank, More shells SHOULD be coming today or tomorrow

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
No

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
I just pick up any food not in the dish and mix around the sand. I do have scoops but haven't needed to use them yet

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
No

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
2 new vines. Hopefully, today or tomorrow--new shells, moapi wood

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
I have moss pit

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.
Yesterday, Bashful was sitting near the food dish--didn't move all day. When I went to turn on the tank light I saw bashful sitting in about the same spot and his shell was on the other side of the dish. I got the container I brought them home in out of my closet and put 3 shells in with him--the one he ditched, a snail shell and the shell that use to belong to my old crab Hermy. carefully, used a measuring spoon that I had just had delivered recently to pick Bashful up and put him in the container then put the container back into the tank. Hoping he picks up the shell or a new one. Keeping my fingers crossed that my now urgently needed package arrives today--it has shells that I now desperately need for Bashful.

Have not seen my other crab since May 13 around 11pm when he was hanging up side down.

Okay, I'm no expert but I'll try to help. What I would do if he doesn't pick up a new shell right away is re-shell him. First check for anything in the shell that could be the reason he left it (sand, rough edges, ect.). Clear anything you find out and try to smooth any rough edges if possible. I'd run a little water through it if possible to make sure there's nothing in the back of the shell. Once the shell is dry gently place him back in the shell. This is where my knowledge on this topic ends, so for now just wait for someone more experienced to help and if they something diffrent listen to them over me.
Proud owner of two snakes, one dog, too many fish, and 3 hermit crabs.

Just took a look into the tank, It looks like he's trying to get back into the shell he dropped? I'm so worried about him. My first crab died of post purchase syndrome now I have these two. I hope nothing happens to them.

please Canada post please hurry up with that package!

Tried the re-shelling method. Think I got it back in the shell. Hopefully not upside down. Hope he says in.

Seems to be still in shell. Still worried. Doesn’t go back further into shell when picked up but hasn’t come out.

Getting the crab to climb in on its on no. I just got 6 shells just for him (they came from hermit crab patch) I haven’t given them to him yet. Cause I don’t know if I need to boil them. I’ve tried to get him back in the shell 3 times with the manual method. The first time it worked then he got out. The second time he fell out when I picked shell up. Got him back in for third time.

Boiling the shells I just got now and then I’m going to see what Bashful is doing. Praying they he’s going to be ok.

Happy is no where to be found so I’m guessing molting.... Again

Only good thing that happened today was my package from hermit crab patch arrived. They included two extra shells and worm casting sample

Read on another post that dead crabs slide around in shell if you grab a leg. I tried that and he fell out completely and the eye stalks are tucked in (I think).

Decided that I would cover the tank front more and leave only the side with the digital read-outs for my gauges visable. praying that he's going to be alright.

Doesn’t overly smell.

I’ve had a snail die before and it took 5 hand washes to get the smell off

If you smell any rotting or fish smell that is bad.
