I got a new hermit crab, but was wondering what species he was. Can anyone help me out here?
Thanks!

He looks similar to mine, but paler in color. Mine is a "purple pincher."

Doesnt look like a PP to me. The shape of the eyes and the big pincher (BP) is saying Indo (C. brevimanus). Can you get a few more shots of the crab (a major one would be tucked into the shell, and just general face, two sides and top).

Yeah. It's an indo. Really cute crab! Indos are one of my favs, they bit gentle giants.

That is a bit worrisome, as I have a few ruggies and I know that in the wild, brevimanus prey on ruggies. He seems a tad small for his species though!

In the wild, crabs of all species are known to predate on eachother if given the chance. They opportunist scavengers, so whatever they can get their claws on and eat... well they going to eat.chrischiam wrote:That is a bit worrisome, as I have a few ruggies and I know that in the wild, brevimanus prey on ruggies. Many members in the past have have ruggies and indos with eachother with success, so I doubt it be an issue for you. Most members noted that their indos seemed to be picked on, and that they rarely defended themselves or acted aggressive in any way.
Edit: he will grow. ^_^ they all have to start out somewhere, he certainly just not mature.

Out of curiosity, are you in the US? It's been literally years and years since someone randomly found an indo here!

Actually, I'm in Singapore- and the only hermits allowed to be kept here are Coenobita Rugosus. However, when I picked him up, I noted that the shape of the pupils were different, which led me to think that he might not be the same species as the others.

The ranges for ruggies and indos overlap substantially, so it makes sense for some to slip through occasionally depending on where they are being collected.
