Very confused

Post by Prosati » Mon Feb 11, 2019 9:22 pm

So I thought one of my hermit crabs went down to molt a few days ago, I accidentally in covered the top of its shell, left it alone and the next day there was a big mound of substrate over where it was with a little tunnel in it. Another one of my crabs I thought was trying to dig him up, so I moved some pieces of wood around to discourage him from getting to the buried one. But today I found that he was there again trying to get at the spot and when I came over to look, he ran away but I saw he had moved a piece of food over to where the other is buried.

Should I move the wood away so the other crab can get to the mound?

It's possible the buried crab isn't even in that spot anymore. They move around under the substrate. How deep is your substrate?

My opinion, leave them alone to do what crabbies do and stay out of the tank. The more interference you give, the more stressed out they will be. Remember, you are trying to simulate a natural tropical habit, like their natural home.

It’s a few inches deep. The one above ground, Crash, is now still trying to get at that spot

Meaning 3-4 because when I got enough to add it to 8 inches, I had noticed one was buried

You can safely add 1" every 24hrs as long as you don't pat it down.
