I REALLY want to get hermies, any good tips?
Hello everyone, I am a new crabber who just joined this morning. I REALLY want to get hermit crabs they are my favorite animal. I have done a ton of research into the little buddies. I know everything I need, and I think my parents are with me on this. Does anyone have any good tips for starting a 20 gallon?

Get the tank and all of the supplies ready and set up before getting the crabs!
A 20 is fairly small. Don't get too many crabs or they will soon out grow it and you'll have to upgrade.
Look to adopt rather than buy. Adopted crabs that have been cared for properly are much more likely to survive.
Good luck and welcome!!

Thank you. Do you think it's big enough for 5 crabs? thats the biggest I can afford.

In case you weren't aware and there's a Petco near you, they're having a great sale on tanks until the beginning of next month. $1/gallonJedi_Crab wrote:Thank you. Do you think it's big enough for 5 crabs? thats the biggest I can afford.

Cool, thanks I didn't know! I will have to persuade my parents to let me buy a bigger one, my mom says a twenty gallon is plenty but I don't agree.

I picked up a 29 and hope to set it up soon (promised my husband that I'd finish taxes first!) With a 20 you're either going tall or long, so either height for climbing or surface area for digging and exploring. Going with a 29 will give me more of both compared to the 10 my two are in now.

I agree, the bigger the better. I have a ten gallon currently and you'd be surprised at how quickly you cam use up the space. The more crabs you have the more shells, the larger the feeding dishes, and the bigger the waterbowls. Same goes with size, the bigger you're going to need of everything listed above. I suggest getting lots of things for them to hide under. Reptile climbing vines are a great investment.y crabs enjoy being under them and climbing on them. Plenty of things they can scale. And chia seeds! Chia seeds are a staple! They can eat the seeds and whatever the seeds sprout. I usually just drop them into the tank on the substrate and usually they're eaten before they get too big (except right now, I have sprouts because my most active crabs are buried. Even the new guy is down. A lot of things you put in your tank cam be assembled yourself at home. Hemp chord can be woven into fish nets, plastic plants can be woven together to create climbing vines, and you can even make your own caves with a lot of patience. YouTube has a lot of DIY videos. Dont just watch the hermit crab ones though, watch reptiles, vivarium, and fish decor too. It'll give you a wide spectrum of what you can do.

I think I could come up with money for a thirty- is that enough for 5 crabs?

It depends on their sizes, really. I would think four I'd a good number for a thirty gallon
