Is crappie safe??

Post by Giner13 » Fri Apr 15, 2016 7:13 pm

I just recently had a patient of mine bring me fresh crappie that he caught, cleaned & filleted for me. I can't find it on either the safe or unsafe foods list...what do ya'll think?? It's an inland fresh-water fish so I wasn't sure.

I'd say go for it, I doubt there'd be any negative effects....that being said I'm by no means a veteran, so I'll let others chime in here. But seeing how as fish is so huge in their diet, and it's fresh I'm sure it's fine. As scavengers hermies are pretty good at identifying what is edible for them, and what is not. If I'm wrong somebody please correct me!

Fish is fish, they're all safe. :) Biggest question is if wherever it was caught was clean and safe - a lot of lakes are loaded with poisons that can build up in the fish that live there, but the risk is higher the farther up the food chain, and crappies are at the bottom.

Crappie is safe. I think the concerns are very low considering the terrific food value of fresh fish!
