Plastic Tote Crabitat?
So about a couple weeks ago my friend gave me her 3 hermit crabs. I had 4 of my own, all small. My four were in a 10 gallon tank. I recently upgraded them to an 18-20 gallon plastic tote to keep them all together. They have lots of shells, climbing stuff and a little second level made of nets I hand made. I was just wondering if anyone out there uses plastic tote as long term housing. I talked to this person on YouTube asking if they had used the totes long term and they said yes, her crabs do just fine and they hold in humidity great, which I agree with. Just looking to see some pics of any owners who use plastic totes Comments and opinions are always welcomed.

Nor necessarily, as I have seen those before. I was just wondering if there are any other people who use them lol, but thank you!

I haven't personally, but a close friend of mine kept her 3 apps in a 30 gallon tote for 4 years, she drilled some small holes in the lid for airflow, besides that she used it as a regular tank with UTH's stuck on the side.

I used one temporarily after getting my first crabs and before finding a 55 gallon on CL. It was a large clear Sterlite tote from Walmart.friesb4uxbabe wrote:Nor necessarily, as I have seen those before. I was just wondering if there are any other people who use them lol, but thank you!

I was thinking of doing this semi-long term till I'm able to get an actual glass tank. I'm hoping for something bigger than a 40 gallon since I have 7 small pps. They are all doing just fine in their tote. I'd ppost a picture but I have no idea how

Also, my 18-20 gallon tote is a Sterilite container from Walmart as well! It was only $7, hoping to upgrade to a bigger tote already

Re: Plastic Tote Crabitat?
I have my crabs in a 40gallon bin. Its larger than my 29L, takes up the entire stand (55g) and im actually really pleased with it. I am able to build up the dirt to about ten inches, have room to build up climbing toys along the back side of the tank, and even had room to put in a houseplant ^^ my guys seem happy with the ample space as well. As they were all over the place (I say were because now I only have two up). Humidity stays stable and its strange but the temperature stays about four degrees higher than the room temperature. this was meant as a permanent solution during hurricane season, but it's looking like its going to be a permanent thing.

I have used a tote for 2 years.

Thats cool! A lot of people usually dont like them because you can't really see them, but I have a clear one and I see them just fine, it doesn't bother me. Also I agree, the humidity does stay stable and it holds heat well! I've only had mine for almost 2 months and my crabs are just fine lol

Re: Plastic Tote Crabitat?
I used a tote as a temporary measure one summer. It worked out well for that but I couldn't imagine it would make a good permanent home. Just because you couldn't have adequate substrate and space for jumbo sized crabs in even the largest bin.
That said, with smaller crabs, you could probably make a good sized bin work for several years.

Yes, I agree. I wouldn't keep jumbos in totes. Since my crabs are still on the small side, I decided to use a tote till I can get my hands on something bigger than a 55 gallon tank due to the fact that I have 7 kids atm. [PERSON RAISING BOTH HANDS IN CELEBRATION]
