Baking and crushing egg shells?

Post by Kermie16 » Sun Jun 26, 2016 8:28 am

Looking for some advice on how to bake egg shells and do I need to rinse them first? And put in food food processor to crush or any other tips/tricks?

I just rinse them and then microwave them in a cup fo water. It gets hot enough to kill the microbes.
Currently the caretaker for:
Six hermies in 37G bow front, and two more in a ten-gallon tank.

I build websites, and blog about ebooks.

Honestly, I just give eggshells to my crabs raw. They eat the goopy stuff out pretty quickly, then slowly munch on the shells. I toss it if it gets gross but they usually don't.

Like @CallaLily, I give my guys eggshell halves still containing a bit of liquid albumin which they love -- that way, they get the protein from the albumin and will pinch away at the shell for calcium. The half-shell not given to them is thoroughly rinsed in very hot water and dried. When I've amassed a number of half-shells, I crush them up by hand and then even smaller in a mortar and pestle; these crushed shells are added to their food dish and are also part of my homemade dry base mix.

Nope, it's fine. They'll consume it fairly quickly, leaving just the empty half-shell. I have 4 PPs, rarely all up at once, but that half-shell doesn't remain intact very long...after a few days, they've reduced it to down to almost nothing, just traces of little shell flakes.

It is perfectly safe for the crabs. For you, be sure to wash your hands after handling and after tank maintenance (which I feel should be the case anyway but especially if you offer raw meat, eggs, etc).

Thanks guys! I usually just toss in the fresh egg shells. Almost daily I serve their fresh foods in the egg shells. But I've got a huge collection of frozen egg shells as well and thought maybe I could bake them then grind them down to sprinkle into the sub? Thoughts?
