Should I be worried??

Should I be worried??

Post by Visual » Fri Nov 11, 2016 2:48 pm

I'm sorry if this is long winded... my Big Boy Coconut seems to have changed behavior and it's freaked me out. It seems to have coincided with my tank changes so I'm worried that I have caused harm or altered things too quickly.
At first I only had a small sticker thermometer that was reading in the mid 70's so I insulated around the whole tank, bought a different light and a light for night time. Then I got a zoo med temp/humidity gage and installed a bubbler. It ran all day. The crabs that are up seemed to dig it. More activity etc. Now after two days Coconut seems really sluggish. I was afraid of the high humidity that climbed to 90 so I unplugged it. Seems to be holding. What do you guys think? Am I stressing too much? Could he be attempting a surface molt? Or maybe just getting ready too? I'll try and attach a video I caught of him.

Dang, it's saying the video file is too large.

Don't worry about 90% humidity as it won't harm the crabs. My tank always runs over 90% and the only thing that happens is dry food gets moldy faster.

Big Boy Coconut may just be getting ready for a molt as crabs often get a little "off" beforehand. Has he been eating? Usually they'll stuff themselves for a few days prior to digging under so if he's planning to molt soon, be sure to offer him good proteins (i.e., egg, chicken, mealworms, shrimp) and calcium (eggshell, cuttlebone) to stock up.

Crabs do have individual personalities as we've all noticed so Coconut may just be slower to adjust to the crabitat changes. Doesn't sound like anything to worry about :) .

I agree with Crabinski. My guys right after molts are hugely active and wreck the tank daily and chow down every night. Now they have slowed down a lot - one has been behind the coco wall for a couple of days now. I know she is doing ok cuz every now and then she peeks her eyeballs out Image I'm thinking she may be getting ready for another molt :) So no worries! I'm sure Coconut is either just adjusting to the change or maybe getting ready to dig down for a molt Image

Shew, thanks guys. It panicked me big time. It's almost like a blank stare he's been doing. Not moving his antenna hardly at all and no quick reflex to pop back in his shell. He's been spending a lot of time with his head out actually. I had been offering sardine pieces but theyve stopped being interested so I've just served egg and egg shell with a sprinkling of generic hermit food. Cuttle bone is always available so now I'm feeling good about things.

Do be careful with canned fish meats, they can obtain high levels of mercury and other heavy metals. Plus some canned meats has foreign ingredients and some are high in iodine, I personally don't give mine any canned foods, with the exception of a high quality high protein canned cat/dog food, but it's rare and only as a small treat.

I made sure to get fresh caught sardines packed in water. I attempted a organic wet cat food but no one got interested. My Big guy though, he's still zoned out. I haven't had crabs long but I've never seen one act this way. No antenna movements, not retreating fully into his shell unless I actually pick him up. He has changed locations a few times since my original post but still not digging down. I put out chicken last night with the egg shells and no movement or interest. :(
