Quiet Time: When the crabs dig under

Post by CrabMater » Sat Nov 12, 2016 9:58 am

I haven't been by for a few weeks because my crabs are dug under. Again. Feels like they were just buried but its been 2 months.
What do you guys do during this quiet time? Currently 2/3 PPs are dug under. 1 (John) is spending the entire day under the coconut hut. He comes out around 5-6pm, a bit after I put the food out. A hot piece of hamburger or chicken usually draws him out. I make sure that the food is pungent so he doesn't decide hes in the mood for seafood. I cant do any floor redecorating. Im focused on the wall nets. Trying to get a net to stretch across the whole tank and along the walls. Cheerio is a climber and dangler. Pics when I get it together.

I'm in the exact spot you are, two of four are under. It's so quiet. I'm positive that the two are under, I searched. I heard then a few nights ago but it's been quiet ever since. I'm worried. But I have been wanting to go buy a new tiny crab. Thank goodness pet supplies plus and petsmart are out of hermits, and I will never go to petco again after yesterday

I like to use Quiet Time to wipe down the walls w vinegar and smooth out sand. If anything is moldy it gets a vinegar spritz and a second FW water spritz. Ive been lucky w mold. Hoping daily fresh air fanning and light is helping keep mold down.

When those guys are awake they trash the joint on a nightly basis.
I heard them clicking around underground so i know someone is around. Since this is my 2nd round of 2week+ dig downs, im less worried.

Our spider crab has been down for about 14 weeks now. It's funny how they can miss a whole season When most of the crabbies r down I like to do a little cleaning up and rearrange/redecorate stuff so it will look more interesting (at least for me! Lol!) when they come back up. We also have zebra isopods (we affectionately call them the Marties) that roam the tank cleaning up so they can be fun to watch too

We have had him since April 2016. He is a medium sized crab and this will be his 4th molt with us . Our last one took 12 weeks.

Wow. Sounds like he's living the good life with you though Kermie. I'm going with the assumption that they grow when things....conditions/food etc are right for them. That's awesome. A long time to be gone though.

I think my guys like to stay down long enough and wait until I start to get worried. Then they pop up in the morning like they weren't gone for 12 weeks

Its 4:30 in the morning. I just caught John in the food dish. Like on top of the food.
He's lonely i think. He was bonded with Cheerio but after i introduced Dean those two hit it off. And Cheerio became a loner. And not so much a loner but a "climb then perch for 7 hours" crab and no one could dangle as long as Cheerio.
John, single again, sleeps alllll day. Only eats when i dim the house light and the crabitat sunn is off. He was the crab that needed to molt and hasnt.
Like my entire experience with these crabs, im a little in the dark about John. He may have molted in these past weeks. I have not seen him under the light so i cant say.
I changed the MSW pool yesterday and misted. Its warm in my apt so its 84-89% RH temps 86-82F day and night. Food gets dragged to Johnson Ave (2 sticks that are perpendicular. John sits directly on top and makes the other two go over or around him. Since Dean and Cheerio returned to the DownBelow hes hidden from the lights and sleeps under the coconut shell. He used to be a very curious crab, but alone he is an extremely cautious crab and close shelled. I have covered the tank 3/4 of the way and we are all stepping lighter. Soon one or two of his pack will emerge.

Beautifully written, CrabMater! For a moment there I felt like I was reading a novel Hope some of John's friends come up to play with him soon ! When I had only one crab up, our Chime, really seemed to enjoy it. He roamed the tank almost daily! Lol! The personalities of these guys are entertaining for sure!

I've missed your posts CrabMater! They are always so entertaining! (How you name everything in your tank Image. Glad all is well except for lonely John! (The third wheel~ poor guy!) No need to clean your tank that much, mold doesn't hurt the crabs~ unless it bothers you! Glad you have been successful in getting your humidity up!
