What medals are good and bad for hermits?

Post by hairycrab » Tue Dec 27, 2016 4:08 pm

I wanna get bird toys for my crabs and they might have a cute bell but I'm wondering if there's any types of medal that's not bad for crabs. Like copper? Is all medal bad for them or just certain types??

Incidentally, copper is more likely to be problematic for them.

Metals will corrode in high humidity (except gold of course) - you're much better off with plastics and natural materials (wood, reeds, jute, shell, hemp, sissal, etc.) Also, a lot of cheap metals contain copper which will be exposed as the metal corrodes. Nickel an tin are examples. :)

Why not try to make something like the bird toys you've seen using natural stuff?

So I'm assuming that probably means all metal can irritate crabs and rust and they eat it. I wonder if plastic bells exist. :?:

*Only iron can rust, all other metal oxidize. *
Besides, that, I imagine the best metals to use would be stainless steel - more of a alloy - but most of the cheap bird toys will also be fine. Just keep it away from the SW pool regardless!

Most medals would probably give them a feeling of accomplishment. Just skip out on participation awards, they give unearned pride.

Omg :hlol: I decided this forever ago but I'm not using any metal for my hermit crabs regardless of what kind. It's safe to assume all metal is bad for them because it's probably true.
