MEALWORM ESCAPED

Post by biancaalexis » Mon Dec 19, 2016 8:41 am

A few of the mealworms I bought for my crabs have escaped their container. I removed the container with the mealworms, but there are still some in the tank. Do you think the crabs will kill them before they change into bugs??? Im so scared

I'd bet that even if the crabs aren't fast enough (or motivated enough) to catch the meal worms, you wont end up with a beetle infestation.... my finicky gecko suddenly decided he wouldn't eat them any more, at which time there were a number of them in his tank. They lived a while but never pupated into adults, and eventually I found them dead when I switched out his sub. I don't think they do well in higher humidity - I've the notion they prefer things dry.

just like lady said you should be fine. they do need lower humidity to survive. also they shed and molt just like crabs but at the surface so you hermits should get to them easily. also when they go to pupate the sort of shrivel up in a 'C' shape and are like this for about 2-3 days. again super easy pickings for your crabs. most do not make it threw the final molt and live so if it was a few you may get one at max. next time put them in the freeze for a little bit. depending on how long will depend on if they are alive or not.

i work at a feed, pet and garden store (im a small animal specialist and dog trainer) we had a headhog that was going threw its own delicate version of PPS (we work with rescues/surrenders only. it was turned over from a breeder) so a long story shot i found freezing the crabs for a few hours until they stopped moving then leaving them out for a little bit to warm up would either kill the worms or slow them down enough to so they cant escape/easier to eat.

Wait, freezing the crabs? Were you feeding crabs to the hedgehog? Like, tiney ones?
