New rescue crab Bing fought over.

Post by mrs.mr.hayner » Thu Jan 19, 2017 7:49 pm

ok guys I got a rescue about three days ago just moved her from iso in to the my newly put together 50 gal tank (had to go bye one my 20 gal had a side bust And this one was a good price ) diped all crabs in water dish and put them in tank. Qeen bee spent 10 min going and rolling all the shells with and with out other crabs In it. then I'm guessing what I was seeing was crabs shell fighting they lined up like they were going to do one big shell Chang but then one pushed one off the new crab in line then they started flipping each other over. it's stoped now But it was crazy I moved one to the other side of the tank. is she getting ready to molt or are they trying to steal her shell.

A change of surroundings could be stressfull, add to that a new individual that may disrupt the established social order, and I wouldn't be surprised if they needed to... I dunno - they may need to engage in the crab equivalent of acting out?

How many shells per crab are there?

Make sure you have at least 3-4 shells slightly larger for each crab, one that is smaller doesn't hurt either. I have noticed that once one of mine starts checking shells out, sometimes the others become interested too. I think of it like kids who don't want a toy until their brother has it. :D But it sounds almost like the hermit crab chain in the wild...where they all do a simultaneous change. I know somebody posted the video here, but its a great find on youtube, and it's a very interesting watch. :D

I do have 3-4 plus some per crab except for shell for the newest she's 5 cent size compared to 25 cent size of all my others. I tried to find shells her size but can't find them. her shell is long and round (never seen one be for) small painted shell.

AS long as both parties are in good shape, not aiming for the eyes or excessive chirping... I wouldn't worry about it.
