Bought in painted shells

Post by Undercrablife » Sat Jul 15, 2017 11:04 pm

My 2 toddler hermit crabs are in painted shells case that's how I bought them. The cage they were in when I bought them had like 2 jumbo crabs on them.so I got another so he won't be lonely on the ride home so I got home and put them with 2 other crabs I had (runner and frankford) with the new pair I just bought (striker and ice) so now how do I get striker and ice (striker is molting or hiding) out of those stupid toxic poisonous painted shells I'm know how the painted shell business is bad it is very bad and I hope it can end. So back on topic how do I get them out the painted shells

Hiya & welcome! :)

First of all, I'd recommend checking out the HCA care sheet linked below if you haven't seen it yet:
http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 51&t=92457

Also, there is lots of great stuff in the FAQ section, including a page about shells.

You can dip the good shells in salt water to entice your crabs (after boiling the good shells), but other than that all you can do is wait for your crabs to choose new shells. Some crabs can be stubborn about this.
"Gaze upon the rolling deep..."
Quince the fat tailed gecko; Amazonian minnows; and now Harry & Luis, Bede & Aster, Chandra & Jace, Pax, & Piccolo, my adopted PPs.
RIP Vegita :(

You can often order online for less... if you check out the shopping resources, there are several online stores that sell great shells. I'm partial to Richards and Naples.

They will get out of them just give them some time. It wasn't long after mine were home and settled, they started "trying on" all of the ones I put in the aquarium! !!

I keep checking out Richards online, and they have great variety, but i dont understand most of their measurements. Like 22nds and 23rds... i just dont know what all that means and i instantly run away to ebay lol

If you have an assortment of shells avaliable, they will change on their own. Usually when I bring a new one home from a pet shop, the first thing they do is swap shells( I have around 30+shells in cage) Once they leave it, give it a few hours and remove it. Only reason I say to wait and not instantly remove it, is because crabs are weird about their original shells. Sometimes they will go back to it, maybe the new shell was to heavy or the inside pokes their abdomen, and if its removed, they may go naked.

If you dont have a lot to chose from or various sizes, order some off the internet. You could go to walmart in the mean time and buy their 10 multi pack from the arts and crafts section. You can usually get 8+ turbos in that bundle.
