Pinterest idea that actually worked!

Post by ashleylovesyou » Mon Aug 27, 2018 11:58 am

I don't know about you guys, but most of the projects I've found on Pinterest have failed miserably when I attempted to do them. I'm happy to report that this one worked out great!

Basically, I made a saltwater pool out of a glass fishbowl/globe. Here's the photo from Pinterest:

And here's a picture of my crabitat with the pool in the back corner:

I found the fishbowl at a thrift store for like $2, added rocks from the dollar store to the bottom to make it just deep enough for them to submerge, and arranged some moss at the base for them to climb up to the opening. I also added a bubbler and wrapped some artificial greenery around the tube so they can use it to climb in and out of the bowl itself. The bubbler makes the saltwater kinda foamy, but it's doing an AMAZING job keeping the humidity up. Whenever the water gets low, I use a turkey baster to top it off.

I haven't seen my crab use it yet (the other one is molting), but I did catch her checking it out:

She probably would've gone for a dip if a big, scary human wasn't watching

It's pretty cool, glad you found something you liked! :)
Do you have craft mesh or something for them to climb up into it more easily?
Your tank looks great!

Thanks for the tip! I'm planning to get some mesh to hang on one side of the tank for them to climb up. I should definitely get some leading up to the fishbowl, too! I was actually just browsing for some online earlier today, but it's hard to tell if it's safe, and some of the natural/organic hemp netting I've seen is actually kind of pricey! I think I'll take a trip to A.C. Moore this week to hopefully get a good deal on something I can feel in person to make sure it isn't waxy. I could always get plastic mesh, but I prefer the way the ropey kind looks.

Neat idea! You might need to get a gang valve for your pump. I use them on each of my tanks. The gang valve will allow you to control the air flow to your air stone. Perhaps if you turn the air flow down there won't be as many bubbles, and your hermits will be more likely to use it. :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Wow! What a GREAT idea! Is the tubing just in the front of the opening? Ive tried pulling off a moss pit in something similar, crabs never went in there.

Good idea, since a lot of people have similar lying around their house. Look good.

I love this idea! I actually have one of these bowls lying in my spare room. I might have to steal this idea and try it with a freshwater pool!

I did this with a moss pit! But one day when I was rearranging my tank, it fell and cracked. I decided I didn't want the sharp end where a piece broke off exposed to my crabs, so I threw it away.
