Are Southern Grove Mixed Nuts with Sea Salt ok to give them to eat?

Post by FSkerlak » Mon Feb 25, 2019 10:16 am

I was at Aldi today and saw these Southern Grove Mixed Nuts with Sea Salt. All of the nuts except Brazil Nuts are on the safe food list, but they aren't on the unsafe list either. I'll list the ingredients as shown. Peanuts, almonds, cashews, Brazil Nuts, pecans, peanut oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower seed oil, and/or canola oil, sea salt. In that order. Is this safe to give them?

not the sea salt. get all natural diced pecans. my crabs love them! they are very safe and give a nice boost of protien!

Sea salt is safe. It’s the normal table salt we avoid because of the anti-caking substances added.

Brazil nuts have never been officially tested, which is why they’re not on the lists. I don’t think they’re unsafe. If you’re worried you can always just pick then out and eat them yourself.

Here is the safe food list. There are oils other than fish oil on the list:

I believe people have offered foods with these ingredients to crabs before without ill effects. Most food oils aren’t unsafe.

Where did you read this? Coconut oil, olive oil, and other nut based oils have been used safely with hermits for years.

That’s one of the HCA founders and a crabber for decades. I wonder why they would say that.

I just read Christa’s food and feeding page three times (hermit-crabs.com) and nowhere does it say that you cannot give crabs oils other than fish oil.

Sorry, I know this is an old post, but organic seaweed with sea salt is ok to crush up and give to the hermies? Sea salt on some food is ok? Like organic tuna with sea salt and water? That is not harmful like normal table salt?

Yes, that is fine. Salt is salt. Table salt is a concern for pools/ water, but some in food is okay.
