Dropped Big Pincher

Post by Adastra1018 » Sat May 04, 2019 4:40 pm

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?

Straight play sand, 6 inches. (Planning to go back to an ee/sand mix at some point and make it deeper.)

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?

My hygrometer battery died but its always right around 80% Temp stays around 80 deg.

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?

Yes, an ultratherm along the back wall

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?

Fresh and saltwater available at all times, tap water treated with prime, and I use instant ocean.

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?

They get a different type of food every night, this is not an exhaustive list, but for the last few months I've mostly been giving them the following: A wide variety of fruit, lately its been coconut, pineapple, mango, and blueberry. Veggies include carrots, green peppers, butternut squash, sweet potato. (Admittedly, they don't get veggies as much as everything else. I plan to create a feeding calendar to help promote proper nutritional variety) Proteins include walnut/almonds, dried mealworms/bloodworms, frozen mysis shrimp/bloodworms from the frozen fish food section (they also get a similar type containing spirulina, both are high quality Omega One brand.) They also get chia, millet, Omega One brand kelp flakes, and on occasion, oats and plain air popped popcorn. Since spring is here they will be now be getting more leaves/flowers/bark per the safe food list.

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?

Purple Pincher, It's been roughly 2 years, if it's the crab I'm thinking it is. (Getting hard to tell them apart)

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?

Yes, I'm not sure how long ago.

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?

75 gallon tank with glass lids.

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?

I just found my largest crab dead in the sand. :( So that brings me down to 4 in total, 1 medium, and 3 smalls about the size of a golf ball.

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?

About 15, I have more that have now been outgrown. Will measure everyone today and place an order for more shells soon.

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?

No.

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?

I remove old food and feces from the sand surface every couple days and change water as needed.

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?

No.

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?

A plastic plant from the pet store that was rinsed in dechlorinated water, added about a month ago.

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

I am very hands off, I only noticed the issue today because I was doing a more thorough clean, and it may have been partially my fault, but I wouldn't have known about my other now deceased crab otherwise. The crab in question was a rescue off craigslist, I don't have any information of how he was previously cared for.

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.

So I was doing a deeper clean today and accidentally unearthed my 2 crabs that went under a few months ago, roughly. My large crab I already mentioned was found very dead. I figured he was molting all this time. He was a surrender that had been pretty well cared for other than the commercial food they were supplementing him with but they said he actually seemed to like it. (I threw it out once I got home) This was completely unexpected, but I guess he may have just been at the end of his life considering the stress he may have gone through. He was quite large, therefore an older crab. But anyway, my crab that I'm concerned about: He dropped his BP as soon as unearthed him and I picked him up. It may have already been dropped honestly. It smelled a bit fishy at first but now has a normal crab smell, if that even exists. I guess I'm just wondering about the risk of illness because of his behavior and what I smelled. (Ok I just took a second close look and he may be missing a leg as well. He's pulled inside his shell and won't budge, but he's definitely alive) He still has a bright red color and doesn't really look like he's about to molt. There was no exoskeleton around him. I'm sure the stress of me unearthing him may have caused it to drop but my gut tells me there may actually be something wrong because he's usually above ground and active. Admittedly I've unburried a lot of crabs (mostly the ones in the pet store I work at, I don't really have a choice when a customer wants to buy one or when we need to take inventory) and I've never had anyone drop a limb in response. He's currently in the tank inside a glass fish bowl so the others can't get to him. He has enough sand in the bowl to bury himself and he has food and water in there as well. If there's anything else I should do for him please let me know! I've adopted a crab from work with a dropped limb and he grew it back after a molt no problem so I've been through this before but I've never had a healthy crab of mine drop a limb. I'd love to learn as much as I can from everyone's' experiences.

Hello. I'm sorry you are having issues. So a few things that I would recommend. First of all, quit deep cleaning. Unless you have a bacterial bloom or a flood, I don't think this is necessary. I've never done these. It never hurts to have deeper substrate. Recommended is 6 inches or three times the size of your largest crab - and whichever is THE DEEPEST of those figures is what it should be. Also, is your substrate moistened with dechlorinated msw or dechlorinated fw?

The two things you need to fix immediately is hydrometer/thermometer: https://www.amazon.com/AcuRite-01130M-D ... 78&sr=8-27

Secondly: Are you offering calcium? Cuttlebone, coral, oystershell, eggshell. :) Should be offered at all times.

I would also offer more proteins. Animal proteins. Chicken, fish, eggs, pork. Any meats you are having give them some before you put seasoning on it. They don't need it cooked. :) Good luck!

I moisten the substrate with fresh water, dechlorinated of course. I just reread my post and realized I wasn't very clear, my apologies. My "deep cleaning" really only consists of scraping the top layer and then stirring the substrate when everyone is confirmed to above ground, and I only do that maybe once or twice a year but if stirring isn't necessary then I'll quit doing it. These two in particular weren't really dug up but their tunnels were exposed when I picked the drift wood up to clean all the poop out. It collects in the pockets in the wood and underneath where I can't normally reach, but I just stuffed some moss in the holes to prevent that from happening from now on. I recently read on here about stacking water containers so that you can remove them and not expose/collapse tunnels which is an excellent idea that I plan on doing. The first one I knew right away was dead. The second one I really shouldn't have picked up but I wanted to check him just in case. Now that I'm thinking about it, I only saw the BP drop. His leg had to have been missing before I uncovered him.

I gave them chicken the other night, I always forget to save meat for them on a regular basis. I'll definitely make a point to set some aside when I prep meat. They get hard boiled eggs with the shell when I make them. They do get cuttle bone, I forgot to mention, but they never seem to go for it. possibly they wait until I'm sleeping? I'll start adding eggshell more often in case they prefer that, I was actually just looking for untreated/organic sea stars and sand dollars online this morning. I can add powdered calcium to their food as well. I can mix some with raw organic honey for my little guy tonight, any other food suggestions?

My hygrometer only went out last week and I've been off the last 4 days. I'm getting another tomorrow after work.

Another option for you could be baby food. You can get the jars and then freeze the portions into ice cube trays :)

There are several options for you food wise! Please refer to the safe food list on here! You just need to refrain from seasonings. Try to buy organic when possible. Hermit crabs are sensitive to fertilizers and pesticides.

I personally don’t recommend starfish and sea biscuits online. A vast majority are dried using preservatives either alcohol and or bleach. They are also usually done overseas as well.

My guys love Cuttlebone- but they eat practically everything at night anyway.

Great idea with the baby food! For this guy specifically it'll be easier to eat at this time anyway. I always save tuna for and shrimp for them when I get it, as longs as it meets crab food standards with no seasonings or anything that may be toxic but I don't eat it often. I also used to freeze chunks of cooked meat but it seems to dry out so bad that I quit doing it. I've offered the freeze dried meat treats from the cat isle of the pet store (only the ones that have absolutely nothing added, they're just freeze dried meat chunks) and they like most of those, but I ran out and never got any more. I also forgot to mention that I always save my chicken leg bones when I get them and crack them open for the marrow. They go nuts.

As for the sea stars and biscuits, I was looking on Etsy so that I can contact the seller and find out if they've been treated but I'm not willing to risk anything. I did find one seller that had organic fragments but it wasn't worth the money. Our eggs come from my mother in law's chickens and they're free. They're are other things they can get plenty of calcium from.

Just an update, he had moved to the food last night and later moved back to the corner. I didn't see him eat since I covered the tank with a towel and turned the lights off so as not to stress or disturb him too much, but I'm cautiously optimistic. I'll get some baby food for him today.

Thank you so much for your help and suggestions!

On the topic of the missing pincer, one of my hermies (Sheldon) lost/dropped his after an encounter with a new crab in the enclosure when I first introduced them. Sheldon dropped a leg as well, which im guessing was result of the shell fight with the new crab.

I kept him isolated for a while to keep an eye on him and let him de-stress, and ever since he hasnt had any issues with the missing pincer or leg. I would just say that if he doesnt have the pincer, just keep an eye on him and the other crabs he is around. If any of the others start showing aggression towards him I would take him out, just to keep him safe because he doesnt have that claw to protect himself with if he were to need it. Im still waiting for Sheldon to molt and to start regrowing the limbs, but as I said, he's managing just fine without them. The only difference is he doesnt climb as much!
Hopefully this helps ease a little stress about the lost pincer!

He's isolated currently but still in the main tank. I have him in a small tank with food and water and deep sand and I placed that tank without a lid inside the main tank so he still has all the heat and humidity without extra effort from me. (fortunately it fits just fine!) The iso tank has high sides so he can't climb out and his buddies aren't able to get in. They're so active and he's so lethargic right now that I was worried about leaving them together. He does move around a bit, not sure how much he's eating or drinking but he has approached the food dish and is still responsive. I'm mashing up all his food and I got baby food for him so it'll be easier for him to eat.

I hope Sheldon recovers quickly and smoothly! I adopted Schooner with missing legs and I hated that he had to go through it, but it was the coolest thing seeing him suddenly emerge with brand new legs!

Raw Organic Honey, Bee Pollen, and Brine Shrimp eggs would also be really good foods for him as well. I was hand feeding our Eddie twice a day for almost a month before he passed. Somehow he lost all but one leg, Unsure if he was attacked or was from a bacterial bloom. It also helped to dip q-tips in natural peanut butter or honey then dip that into some of his foods and lay them near him.

As for the baby food. I like to put it into a ziplock bag and lay it flat in the freezer. When I remember it is in the freezer I can just break off a little piece and put it in their dish or a bottle cap.

I’m sorry your guy dropped his BP! And that you lost the adoptee, that’s always sad.

@Motorcrab-Love love the idea of flat bag freezing the baby food. That is just my kind of simple and easy prep and serving style. Gonna do that as soon as I go to the store next. You’re always coming up with good stuff- Thanks!

Thanks, but some of my ideas I just regurgitate from advise I got from others on here. I'm pretty sure I got this idea from aussieJJDude.

Wherever that came from it’s brilliant!
And perhaps I just happen to see it when you say it, or perhaps it’s just that you respond to many more posts etc, and so have more opportunities to mention them. Either way- awesome and thanks!
