Tank bloom, new tank glass issue

Post by Plasmoc » Wed Nov 04, 2020 7:09 pm

Hi! My crabs tank developed an algae bloom (due to too high humidity plus having the shade open next to the tank a lot that we usually keep closed), so I thought it’d be a good time to upgrade to the tank I’ve been wanting for 2 years Image

It’s a 16 gallon Fluval, bowed front, with a plastic lighted lid.

Cleaning the new tank I saw it has this.. thing IN the glass on the bottom. Looks like a thread? It is dime-size and doesn’t scrub off, but is slightly raised inside of tank and not outside of tank. Will this weaken the bottom of the tank, or is it ok to hold substrate etc?

Also- will the built in light in the lid be a problem? I would use it sparingly if at all.

I already know what conditions I need to fix that caused the bloom, got a new UTH for the back of the tank & a thermostat so I can control temp better, etc. and I’ll keep the shade down . Our crab is healthy but I know I need to get him out of the yucky tank ASAP

The light in the tank is fine. I would just leave the worm thing if it’s just a mark ( if it is a crack you would have to do something about it) I would recommend getting him into a different tank if he’s gonna be in there for more then a day because the bacterial bloom could easily kill him

Thank you for the fast reply! I plan to change the whole tank out in the morning. It was green (algae right?) and then while waiting for the new tank and substrate a red area popped up, but yesterday it started looking darker so I think it’s turned into a bloom. It’s all bad, I know, I’ve been a bad crab Mom. The pandemic, little kids schooling at home, squeezing in work, and lack of childcare, etc has made it very hard to just run to a store to grab things. Hopefully I haven’t let it go too long On the hopeful side he molted recently and isn’t digging around so I don’t think he’ll go digging tonight.

Update:

He’s settling into the new tank. So far he’s eaten & checked out both water dishes, but hasn’t ventured to the upper levels yet (been a few hours).

The temp & humidity is a bit wonky still... AcuRite digital humidity & temp gauge says 87% humidity and 78 degrees F. Temp
is set for 79 with a Vivosun thermostat,,, is that too high? It has a +-2 degree variant if I’m reading it right.

I *might* have added too much substrate Image(eco earth & playsand to sandcastle consistency with dechlorinated water).

I need to add more of his smaller shells back in but I kept them out to boil them tonight. You can catch him in the seconds far right under the platform.

Nice, don’t worry we all have days when we don’t have time to do things but your crab tank looks great

Thanks! I want to add a new spinner wheel but haven’t figured out how to attach it yet. Off I go to the DIY section
