where are your crabs?

hey guys!

i currently have both my tanks in my bedroom
it’s a pretty tight squeeze with a 55 gal and 20 gal in an already small room
i would love to move the tanks to the basement but i’m honestly so so scared because i’m so used to them being right there next to me so i check them constantly i’m just worried to put them down there even though they would probably be fine

so where do you guys keep your crabs ?

Mine are in my bedroom
I currently only have a 29 gallon but soon I'm also going to have a 20 gallon long

So I have 4 UTH's, which I plug/ unplug as needed. I check the tank most days, and when the room temp will vary greatly between morning and night, I check twice a day. It works for me.

Just curious, how big is your tank?

My tank is 55 gallons. I have two crabs.
I have two of the UTH on the back, and one on each side. Only two of them can be insulated, the other two are Zoo Med and can't be insulated over top.

Mine are kept in my room, but I’m actually not in there that much if that gives you any peace of mind I have a 20L and a 10g that I’ll hopefully have out of commission as soon as I can move my molter to my 20.

I have OCD, so I peek in on my crabbies frequently when I'm home. It would drive me crazy if I couldn't. They used to be in my room, but got their own room across from mine when I moved. If your comfortable with checking in on them once/day and you think it will be warm enough, go for it.

Mine are in the dining area of my townhome and with a pretty open floor plan, they’re kinda right in the middle of it all. My house is usually pretty calm and quiet so it works, but I absolutely love having them so close bc like @crabbylover77 I love checking in on them often. Observing them is the best part and I can’t imagine them not being so accessible...but that’s just me!

Basement should work if conditions are right though! I’m inclined to mention the use of my kitchen sink for upkeep. I’m happy to have it so close by and handy bc I clean out their food dishes every few days and randomly clean shells and decor and it’s easy when I’m mixing their fresh and/or salt water. Maybe you have one down there, but it’s something to consider.

Having a sink close by is def a plus for me. I don't have one in the basement, but I know some people that do. My hall bath is diagonal from my pet room. I even have little towels and a dish mat set up on the sink to put my clean crabby/tortoise/fish dishes/decorations lol.

i do have a sink down there in a bathroom. i live in a ranch house so it’s a main floor and the basement.
the only thing is it’s a bit cooler down there but i think i will be able to fix that and make it work
now the hard part....
i have a really good idea of what i’m doing but any tips on transporting the crabs down there?
i have a 55 gal so there’s over 150 pounds of sand about
idk if i will move the 20 gal though
i also always have molters so i can’t just pick them all up
they have to make it hard on me!

I looked it up and a 55 gal tank weighs appx 78 lbs empty, so you're talking about 228 lbs+ with the sand. I'm not quite sure how you could move all that without disturbing their tunnels and whatnot, and without hurting yourself. My Mom and I moved my 20 gal filled with sand to the new house, and I was all out of breath on that one lol!

i think i have most of them up
i’m worried bc i know i have some first time molters (i usually rather put them in an isolation tank before the big tank so they molt but then was when my ten gal broke)
i know i have had crabs pass during their first molt with me before and am worried it’ll happen again
so idk because i can’t even tell you what crabs are buried because they are LOVE green turbos and ugh it’s so confusing because 3/4 of my crabs are in them and they r all the same size and all they do is change shells
tbh i have a hard to me with the four in my 20 gal because they keep switching shells
i sound like a horrible crab mom but i’m telling my crabs love to make things hard

Yeah, I think the only way to do it would be to empty the tank and prepare to isolate molters if necessary.
You're not a bad crab Mom! There was someone on here I talked to a year ago who said they name all of their hermits "crab" because they can't tell them apart lol! I just bought 2 of those carved shells with dolphins on them from Naples. Of course, 2 of the crabs in my 20 gal moved into each one. Now I'm so confused, they look the same lol! So don't worry, you're not the only one who gets mixed up!
