Humidifier in my room
Humidifier in my room
I have a humidifier running in my room at the moment and I was wondering if it will disturb my crabs as it's just sink water. The humidifier is a few feet away from the tank. And it's a cold humidifier, the mist comes out cool not hot.

It's fine to use and it won't affect them since it's running into the room and not directly into their tank.

Hi,
You may want to switch to distilled water to extend the life of your humidifier. Minerals from tap water tend to clog up and slow down your machine. Using tap water can also release mold, bacteria, and other particles into the air you breathe.

Thank you guys for the replies. I will definitely switch to distilled for maximum humidifier life. Thanks for the tip

Distilled can still contain bacteria, there have been outbreaks of various pathogens from it.

Really? I didn't know that, thanks. I just know I used my humidifier with tap and it ended up with a ton of mineral buildup inside.wodesorel wrote:Distilled can still contain bacteria, there have been outbreaks of various pathogens from it.

Re: Humidifier in my room
Yeah, there have been cases of horrific infections when used in a medical fashion, because distilled isn't sterilized. The risk of bacterial growth is about the same as tap.
Distilled does help prevent mineral buildup as it's obviously mineral free. Humidifiers should be cleaned every few days (CDC directions) since any unchlorinated water can grow nasty stuff over time, and ideally that will also help prevent buildup. I scrub mine down and sometimes do vinegar soaks and it keeps mine running well since I've had one on 24/7 for my skin the last few years.

Re: Humidifier in my room
Oh wow, that's horrible! I think I cleaned mine every 2 weeks, so it probably wasn't enough. My nose would bleed a bit in the winter because it was so dry in the house, and the humidifier helped. I got tired of taking care of it tho so I switched to non medicated nasal sprays which seem to help too. So I just stick to that.wodesorel wrote:Yeah, there have been cases of horrific infections when used in a medical fashion, because distilled isn't sterilized.
