Hermit Crab Continuously changing shells and streaking

Post by squeelvr06 » Wed Mar 01, 2023 8:17 am

So i've had this hermie for about 6 months and he was really small when I first got him. Ive got a pretty wide array of shells with about 7 in there of varying sizes from the tiny thumb size from when I first got him to massive jumbo crab size and then a few mid size ones in there of varying shapes and what-not. He's always liked changing around his shells but recently he has abandoned any of the old appropriately sized shells he used to use and started changing into the shells that are very obviously too small. Then the other day I woke up and he had no shell on at all! I didn't know what to do and I had to leave so I just kind of hoped he would re-shell himself and luckily he did, but still back into the tiny shell. He continuously keeps taking off his shell and then putting it back on later. His body has gotten covered in substrate from this and i've tried to wash it off with my misting bottle but its not very effective. Would anybody be able to explain this behaviour and maybe advise me on what I should do?

Just to add some extra info - the tank is a 50 gal for two hermies around the size of like a big toe lol. The humidity is usually between 70-90 insulated with aluminum foil on top of the lid in the cracks. The temperature is usually at 25 degrees celsius, with a heating pad on one side. My other hermit crab has been buried for a while so I dont think its a case of shell theft. Thanks for reading all this, I really appreciate it 🙏:)

What opening types are available? Are the bigger shells the same opening shape as the smaller ones? Are they of similar thickness/thinness?

Also, when he does streak, it would be best to iso him in a small container with a a bit of water. Not to submerge him, but just to keep him from drying out until he selects a new shell (he should be given a few choices in his little container)

Streaking is so stressful, I really hope this resolves soon!

Are you offering plenty of calcium and protein daily?
