idea on crab chirp

good theory. mine don't sound like rubber bands though. last time someone chirped it almost sounded like baby alligators or crocodiles telling mom to come dig them up.

That is a very good description. I always describe mine as similar to the odd muttering sound my ducks used to make around the dogs.

duck, frog, alligator, ect, sounds could all be made in the way i described, most likely through different strokes of the mouth parts. there could be many explanations, but unless we can see a chirping crab close up, we may never know.

i think it could be possible.. sounds legitimate to me! And chirping does sound like elastic bands together.

i think i found it. after moving comet to make sure he was ok after Shadow pushed him, he started chirping. i retracted my hand right away, and he was visible in the hut, chirping. his mouth parts WERE moving. i think i may have found how it is done at last

maybe , instead of saying this is the only thing they rub, maybe depending on what is available/or there mood (happy,annoyed,bullied,freshly molted or not) they can rub more than that part together, thus making different sounds. Because mine sometimes sound like chirping,sometimes rubble bands, and other times a gurgle, this could also depend on the shape/species of whatever they are rubbing together, because different species have different sizes and shapes on there bodies.

From some of the motions I've seen during chirping, I've thought they might be pushing air out their gills, and the vibrating of the modified gills creates the noise.

But the mouthpart idea also sounds plausible.
