Preferred Shell Guide

This is where you discuss shells for your hermit crabs. Not for selling/swapping shells, use Classified Ads for that.

I was wondering, when measuring to find proper fitting shells, should I measure the longer part of the opening, or the narrow part? When the crab pulls in, should the shell be measured by the length or width of the BP?

The width. Left to right, not up and down the shell. :)

Does anyone have a good shell identification guide you know of?

There's a shell that one of my crabs was in when I got him from Petsmart and I have no idea what kind it is.

Thanks for the guide. The same crab I speak of switched to a babylonia shell.

I got a kind of whale's eye shell and I read most pps don't like them as they find them really uncomfortable. So far, no one has tried it, so I guess it's true!

Thanks for this thread! I have loads of seashells and was wondering which of them my crabs might like. Jasper changed into a jade turban from his old pica--and then went back to the old one. He can't seem to make up his mind. They remind me of women trying on hats in a boutique.

You should be able to find seashell guides in bookstores like Barnes & Noble. I have one from American Nature Guides that I bought ages ago, don't even remember where. It's not a very good one, though. Just check out your local bookstores, or look on Amazon.com or any bookstore website.

In cape may at diamond beach there is a shop that sells shells in lots of sizes. Nice ones. nice prices too. I know own person here asked where in NJ to find shells. I even found some in a dollar shop, they were all in a basket for 1.00 only 3 in the basket were usuable for my crabs but thats a good deal for one dollar.

This is very helpful. I have lots of shells and apparently they are for Ecuadorians, too bad I can't seem to find one in any pet store. :crabblush:

Any updates to this?

None of my PPs seem to be interested in the Pica shells. (Which is unfortunate, as I have 3 at the moment)
6 PPs (6/12/11): Pinchy/Calypso (♀), Filo (♀), Clack (♂), Statler (♂), Petrie (♂), and Waldorf (♂).
Pinchy and Calypso turned out to be the same crab, pre-molt/post-molt.

Well my PP's love the jade turbos even though i think it's not for them , as well as the Babylonia shells.U can get turbos at a craft store. I go to joan crafts, a bag of shells for 5 dollars. it has a mix though.some really useful shells in there. Just examine the bags for the best mix.
