DIY - Cave

Post by jereka » Tue Mar 23, 2010 12:06 pm

Good day :D

I was looking around the net for ideas to make some pretty/functional items for my tank, and came across this web post. I am wondering if anyone has tried anything like this, and if it would be crab friendly?

Thanks :D

that looks like it will work fine! pvc comes in lots of sizes or you could use a cake frosting container for a bigger hole. You can cut off the bottom if you wanted to.

Oh the frosting container is perfect, ill have to do some baking today so that I have some empty containers.

This is what I made this morning for their water dishes...the salt water will be the bigger one. I used aquarium silicone (man does it stink up the house) and aquarium rocks.

The reason I left the bottom open is for easier cleaning. Since most things in the water sink to the bottom I wanted to be able to scrub it if necessary.

Would you dig them into the substrate or put them on top of the substrate and build a ramp?

Thanks

I would dig them in for a more natural appearance, but you may get more substrate in there that way. It is really nice!

looks really nice but its a cleaning nightmare. too many places for bacteria to accumulate. If your worried about small ones drowning just put a sponge or loose rocks that you can remove and clean.

You are totally right, they look pretty but not as great for the crabs as I had hoped. Now I need to figure out a new dish for them. But it was fun to experiment.
