I will not be giving my Aussie hermit crabs salt water more then once a week. Someone told Bob that I was going to go against him and offer them salt water more then that, however I did not say that. The most I said was I was pretty convinced to. I did not tell Bob that the person who told him this, that they either misinterpreted or miss read what I had posted, I would appreciate if the person could set this strait, because all I was doing was taking somewhat of a census.
I am going to do what Bob has said for Aussie hermit crab care as he truly cares about his hermit crabs, and since he has had thousands of these species for many years and they are doing so well. I hope that no one will take offense to me not taking into account the care they have given to their Aussie hermit crabs that have gotten them through many successful molt and many successful years in your care, there is probably more then one way to do it right.
Thank you for your understanding,
Austin

Wow. I'm sorry someone "told" on you for getting opinions  That's disappointing to read. I look for opinions all the time and I think its wrong to "tell" on someone looking for more info when nothings been decided on.Hermitcrazy wrote:I will not be giving my Aussie hermit crabs salt water more then once a week. A tattle tale? How charming. :roll:Hermitcrazy wrote:I will not be giving my Aussie hermit crabs salt water more then once a week. Even if you were going to, they're your crabs. You spent the $300 on them, and you can care for them how you'd like.

I don't mind that someone had told Bob about what I posted, I mean I put it out there for everyone to see.
Opinions are great, over time peoples opinions showing success have taken us to the level of hermit crab knowledge that we use here on the HCA for care. But in this case I may as well listen to Bob @ELHC -- I mean he has had thousands for many years both care methods are probably applicable.

I'm lost! Probably because I don't know who "Bob" is *LOL*
I see no problem with doing what you feel mate. You do what you think is best - sift through the advice. I've been doing that.
Here in Oz, the few different pet shops have told me about the salt water, however then they don't have humidity or they don't have heating.. Its pretty contradictory. I have just tried to make my tank as natural as their wild habitat. Of course, I'm such a newbie I am sure I have MANY learning curves yet.
Best wishes with them! I'm totally in love with them!

Hi,
I thought I would add a little to this post since I am an Australian with Australian crabs.
First - Bob from ELHC can not have had Australian Hermit crabs for that long as the sole harvester for Australia only applied for their export license in 2009. Before that they were only found in Australia.
Second: In the wild they do have access to salt water when ever they want. I have seen them in the millions on the beach at night.
Third: I have had my crabs for seven months, with no problems, the lady who taught me has had hers for years, and always provided access to salt water.
I think this restricted access to salt water myth comes from the Aussie harvester's website but it is full of old fashioned and incorrect information (they also sell painted shells). I think it is pretty sad that this mis-information has been carried into America.
Still they are a surprisingly tough species of hermie.
Cheers Jennie
