Re: Somebody ate Moya
Sorry for the blast. I had to get it out there while I still could.
What happened was, I looked in the new moss pit and saw part of a ginormous shield leg sitting in there. The only crab I have currently in that tank with such a beefy leg is Moya. I thought maybe she had gotten into a tiff with someone and it was cut off. The leg itself was completely hollow but it didn't feel like exo. (I realize now that it was the missing leg from Mal who had died a few weeks ago. I don't know where they dragged it from, but looking it over again it's old skeleton rather then something from a live crab or a molt.) I couldn't find her anywhere.
Anyway, I see the leg and after a few minutes of freak out I thought maybe I should check the tank. I find an empty shell half-buried, so that's where I start digging. (Mind you, I did not want to spend four hours on the crab tank tonight. Hubby is spending the next two nights at his ex's house to watch the kids while she's out of town. I wanted today to be a nice, quiet, happy, cuddle day.)
First thing I find is a dead crab. Small, probably the inhabitant of the shell I found. He was killed and dragged from the shell right when he shed exo so there is nothing identifiable on him even though he's intact. His legs are just shrivels.
I find Moya's shell sitting there munching on the exo from that crab. Only it's not Moya in the shell. It's a MUCH smaller crab. (Thankfully Thane was about four inches away from all this and survived. BIG sigh from that!)
I went through the whole tank and grabbed every crab that was underground. (No other dead ones, thankfully.) Spend the next few hours setting up another 20 gallon iso and moving everyone in there. And then I had to reset up the big tank since I had gone through every inch of substrate.
(And after that hubby put on the new Pooh movie. If you ever need to feel better, a good dose of Eeyore and Pooh will make everything right again.)
So here's my issue. Is Moya dead and eaten, or is the crab I found Moya and she's just shrinking that much?? Looking at photos I think it may be the same crab? I just can't tell! I hadn't realized that she was due for her molt, so when I found the shell I thought for sure that it couldn't have been her since she had just molted. (She hadn't. I got her in July of 2010 and she molted not long after. For some reason I thought I had just got her this summer.) She did shrink noticeably during her first (and only) molt with me.
I have no doubts that the shell is exactly the same:
When I first got her:
Photos taken in Oct, she is tight in that shell!:
Photos of unknown crab:
Found pieces of claw from under unknown crab. Could possibly be larger that it's own claw? Hard to say for sure:
What do you all think?
