29G Brackish
Re: Fiddler Crabs (9/10 - 29G tank is DONE! w/pics)
Love your tank setup, you did a good job Your species seems to be Uca minax, found along the eastern shore down to Florida. You can tell because they will have red coloration at the joints on their claw. They are fine at temps from 70-80F, so that's probably not what killed some of yours. I've been putting together a site on fiddler care, because of the large amount of misinformation on these guys, you might find it interesting: http://fiddler-crabs.com. I hope you're enjoying your crabs as much as I do mine

Re: Fiddler Crabs (9/10 - 29G tank is DONE! w/pics)
A quick update.
We've added two more small males, which brings the total crabs up to three right-handed males, two left-handed males, and three females. I'm still looking for a few more females but am having trouble finding them, which I think is a good thing.
These are the two new guys:
The big male:
(The other boys are the size of his claw!)
The girls:
When I cleaned out my shell collection I had a bunch of super-heavy virgin murex shells, so they went into the tank as decorations. The fids love them! I think they think they're actually hermit crabs.
Whole tank (please pardon the water spots )
The only plants that are still alive are the pothos. They are growing like weeds in my scorp and roach tanks, so I keep cutting off sprouts and sticking them in the fiddler tank. The fiddlers are spending more time out of the water now that they have more cover, but they still stay underwater about 90% of the time.
And a few (REALLY BAD) videos of the little guys YMCAing. Warning - running water sounds in some of these! I recommend turning the sound off so you don't have to go running off somewhere.

Weird! I posted a reply, and it went through, but now it's gone. Anyways, I said something like:
OH MY GOODNESS! They are so cute!! Loved the videos. I learned how to dance like a fiddler crab!

Re: Fiddler Crabs (9/10 - 29G tank is DONE! w/pics)
Update time - Bad News and Good News
Bad news is I found one of the medium sized males dead last night. I'm not sure how long he had been in the plant like that as he stunk to high heaven when I got him out of the tank. I don't know if it was a molting problem - he kind of crumbled which leads me to think it was a failed molt, but he also had a huge gash on his back so he may have been a victim of fighting. It could also have been post-death scavenging. I'm keeping an eye on all of them now to watch for aggression.
Good news is that I have a female with eggs!!! I haven't seen one since last summer! She had to have gotten PG in my tank as she's one of the ones who had been there for a few months.
I also brought home two more girls this past week, bringing the total number of crabs to five females and four males. (I think. I kinda lost track there for a while. ) I'm going to do a major clean in the next week and I should be able to get a proper head count then! I finally bought some fresh peat moss so I'll be changing out their land area for fresh soil since it had flooded so many times that the salt levels are too high and the pothos is starting to suffer.

Re: Fiddler Crabs (9/10 - 29G tank is DONE! w/pics)
I always wanted fiddlers! Back in the early 90's I did most of my hermit crab shopping at this "Ark Pet Store" in a little strip mall in Blaine (which has now been leveled to make room for a McDonalds or something equally useful).
The fiddler tank and the hermit tank were right next to each other, first thing next to the checkout counter. I must have bought 40 crabs from that tank over time! And lots of the supplies I still have. But I always wanted some of those fiddlers in the next tank over, and kept thinking if they could coexist with my crabbies.
I was always amazed thinking how do they ever eat? They had like guppies in the fiddler tank, and the fiddlers would be constantly tracking the guppies with their eyes and big claws. But their motions were slow jerky, they could never get within an inch of actually catching the fish when they snapped their claw. I wondered how they ever ate? Or the ones that didn't have a big claw, how did they eat? And some had big left claws and some big right claws. What causes that?

Re: Fiddler Crabs (9/10 - 29G tank is DONE! w/pics)
Mine will take small shrimp or algae wafers right out of my fingers. The males will anchor food with their large claw and pick with the small, and the females tend to grab it with both claws and their front legs. Mainly they just scavenge what they can find hidden among the sand on the bottom. (They LOVE fish poop. ) They're very much like hermit crabs in that they like to grab and run with it so they can eat in peace. I also feed lavar (seaweed), insects, and veggies. They are definitely scavengers and not hunters, though I'm sure if they were lucky enough to catch a fish they would!
I even forgot to mention the guppies. I brought home 3 males two weeks ago. The blue one died after 6 days and I don't know why, but they had just come in so it could have been from shipping. The other two are doing great and I'm actually in love with them. (And before this I hated guppies.) One looks like a Monet painting, and the other is a pale cream with red-orange fins. They're a lot more like bettas than I thought possible - they're already coming over and swimming at the front of the tank whenever I stop to peek at them. The cats are going bonkers over them though. The stand is getting ripped to shreds as they're doing chin-ups in order to get a better look. I think we're going to get a few more tomorrow because I am in love! It just depends on what we can find.
I did drop the salinity to 1.008 since we got the guppies, and they seem to be holding strong so I'm crossing my fingers that it works. I've heard of people keeping them in full marine so I think they'll be alright. (I am fighting off the urge to bring home a baby bumblebee goby because they are so cute, but they could eat the fids when grown.) I'm still planning on the blue-legged hermits, but it's going to be a while until we can afford a larger filter and enough coral and live rock to make it work. (Other things came up, so it's on the back burner for now.)
As for having a bigger left or right - it's a 50/50 split when they're born, from what I've read. What's really amazing is if they loose their large claw then on the next molt the other claw enlarges and the missing claw grows in as the small claw. (I actually had this happen in my tank and it was so neat!) In captivity there have been males born with two large claws, which is a really neat mutation.
I'm down to three males (the huge male, the teeny baby, and a small male), and four females (the large one from last summer that is as large as the male, two mediums, and a small). Don't have a clue if I lost count or they died/were killed. (Since we bring them home when we do our grocery runs it's usually late at night after a long day and I sometimes forget to write it down.) We will not be getting any more males unless the big male dies, but we are going to try for some more females as I think we need a larger harem.

Re: Fiddler Crabs (9/10 - 29G tank is DONE! w/pics)
So, since the last writing I found two more females and four more guppies. One of the guppies disappeared after the third day, and I have no idea what happened. The remaining five are doing great!
(Do you know how hard it is to get a photo of a guppy?)
The female let me get photos of her eggs!
A cute shot of one of the other ladies:
And I'm thinking there will be more babies on the horizon. I can't believe I was able to get photos of this! At first I thought they were eating a dead fiddler and then I realized what was going on. I snapped a couple of shots and then turned off the lights to leave them alone. Yes, he was balancing the both of them on that big claw.

those guppies are gorgeous! I used to breed guppies when I was growing up, love all those colors. I've never really seen males with shorter tails like that, it's so pretty!

i am a fish geek and i'm not afraid to show it, show it, i am a fish geek and i know it.
you take better photos of your guppies than i do mine, the best i got was a burry pic, with only the caudal fin in focus.
wow those guppies look better than mine, maybe you could try mollies as they are brackish water.
you could keep bumblebee goby as they grow about 5cm, tat is 2inch right? but the fids could eat them, have bumblebee goby friendly places and goby don't really respond to fish flake, they really just fed live foods or frozen/frized-dried.
