Found Unresponsive Crab in Water Dish...

Post by LucasBinx » Tue May 20, 2014 12:00 am

Just came home to find of of my crabs, Madrigal, out of her shell submerged in the water dish :(

A few weeks ago she was dug up by another crab and I found her shell-less, but was able to get her back in. She had re-grown her lost big pincher, but lost another leg when she was dug up. She seemed to be fine otherwise. Very week from being dug up, but would eat and drink. Sometimes she wouldn't move all day though. Tonight I came home and it looks like she drowned in the water dish. She was out of her shell, in what looks like, she was trying to get herself back up but was too weak to do so.

I removed her from the water, but I'm pretty sure she's gone. She's still in the tank, though, just in case.

Ugh I'm sorry Madrigal...You were one of my favorites. If only I was home to check on you:/

No hermit crabs, but I do have:
2 black back land crabs (care similar to hermits)
8 red claw crabs (brackish, semi-aquatic)
10 mangrove tree crabs (brackish, semi-aquatic)
15 purple & orange fiddler crabs (brackish, semi-aquatic)

Sometimes crabs go to the water when they're going to pass. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's soothing to whatever injuries they have? Sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. :(
Like Calla, I find that the ones who are weak and dying want to return to the water at the end. Not sure why, but it always seems to happen.

All but 1 crab I had that passed went in the water dish without a shell before death... Then again, mine had some kind of weird disease where their abdomen turns a weird purple and go naked before they die.

I am so sorry for your loss. I didn't know about crabs returning to the water. Sputnik did that as well.
