Basking Lamp Raising Temp, But Zapping Humidity :-(

Post by Darcy » Wed Nov 12, 2014 9:49 pm

I have a 10gal, and 3 smallish PP's. The temp started dropping with cooler outdoor temps, so I added the basking lamp pointed at the outside of one end (already have a UTH on the back). Temp back up to mid-high 80s during the day (using a 50w) and high 70s at night when the lamp is off. But the lamp is zapping humidity levels down to 60. :-(

What else can I do? I have moss pits, and mist at least 2x a day. Not sure I have room for bubbler pools or a dogger.

A basking lamp is more of a concentrated beam and can really heat up one spot- which is not the best for humidity.
What kind of lid are you using?
All kinds of crabby!

Maybe scoot thd lamp back a bit further away because you dont need such high temps for PPs. Low end of 80 is fine.
What type of lid do you have?

Edit: typed a lot longer than i needed to

Thanks for replying. :-)

I have a mesh lid covered in Saran. I keep about 1/2" gap open for air on one end of the tank. Would a glass lid be better? Without the lamp, the humidity is fine. I have also thought of adding two small UTHs to the ends of the tank. But I know one day I want to upgrade. Is there another heat option besides basking lamps and UTHs?

I will try moving the lamp back some. Right now it is clamped to the table the tank is sitting on. I may need to find another way to clamp/hang it.

The PPs have def been out and more active with heat in mid 80s.

You can also vent less of yor lid. I used to have about 15% open on the long side. Sometimes i would also cover the whole thing to let the humidity climb before opening 15-20%
