Someone said straw need sun bath in order to prevent losing colour of their body.

Anyone did that?

That's what the UVB lighting does - it acts exactly like natural sunlight.

Yes, I heard of people using UVA/B bulbs to provide their sunbathing needs. Another good idea is to offer a lot of foods that is jam-packed with carotene.

IMO, with those two things I mentioned - UV & carotene - I think it will be impossible for a straw to lose a straws colour...

If only we could figure out what they were dying of exactly.
Maybe they need a certain amount of UBV per day?

Hm. What is their environment like in the wild? Is there something major there that we're missing?

I'd really like to try to get straws this summer maybe with a combo of a high carotene diet, UBV light, high humidity, deep sub, tested salt water pools ( maybe to the balance of what it would be in the wild ) maybe I'd get lucky...? Anyone else tried this to the letter? What am I missing?

They live on the shore unlike most of the other hermit crab species like purple pinchers and indos, who live more in the off shore forests. Their wild diet is likely to be washed up marine life and plants/animals that live along the shore.
Since they live they're living on either just sand or almost all sand in the wild , has anyone considered it to be a substrate issue? I see most people stick their straws, in with they're other crabs with the 5:1 ratio or even just all EE. Since a lot of straws die during molting or shortly after, maybe the consistency of the 5:1 isn't what they're made for and they really just need all sand to really thrive.

It's not a sub issue. I keep my straws on 100% coco fiber (always have) and I have one at nearly 5 years and one at over 3. Although I have lost some straws along the way, I've always had pretty good luck with them as a species.

I was about to say, wouldn't EE only help increase the humidity? I thought since they live near the shore, that higher humidity would help.

Sugar, are you doing something different we haven't considered yet? Are they kept in a big tank alone or with PPs?

I don't think I'm doing anything too different. Up until recently my straws were kept in a 90 gallon and now they're in a 101 gallon. In both cases, I've always kept all my species together.
