My EE must be a death trap!!

Post by GRMU99 » Thu Jan 01, 2015 10:53 pm

I decided to clean water pools in the tank and check on crabs. It's been since October The last time I saw any crabs out. So, when I had moved the water pool I saw a crab shell and when I went to pick it up there was nothing in it other then EE. So, my gut told me to dig to find other 2 crabs. And when I found their shells they were empty. It seams that every time they go down to molt they never come back up.

All 3 of them had only 1 molt with me. The temp was at 75 and the humidity was at 80. My setup had never change since this past summer.

Should I just switch over to all sand or a mix of sand EE??

I know some crabbers use straight EE with good success. Did you keep it moistened to a good tunneling consistency? Maybe it dried out and collapsed on them? It's never a bad thing if you decide to switch to a mix of sand and EE, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to try. I'm sorry you lost all of them. :(

That's so mysterious. There are no other living crabs? Maybe they're all naked, for whatever reason?

You should definitely mix the sand and the EE. It is possible that they changed shells and you found the old shells?

I use straight EE and have had many successful molts. Shouldn't be due to the EE in specific.

I agree that it's unlikely the cocofiber is the cause. Many crabbers use straight EE with no issue. Can you go over your tank conditions so we can try to help pinpoint the problem? You said they both had one molt with you so I'm guessing they were still pretty new? What species?
