Hermit Crab Anatomy

I was doing some research for a Taxonomy project in AP Biology today. One of the requirements was to pick and discuss a genus within the Phylum Arthropoda. Naturally, I picked Coenobita

Anyway, I stumbled across this picture and figured you guys (or at least the more research oriented of you) would appreciate it. It displays the anatomy and structure nicely, while keeping it from being too complicated.

(Note: This specific diagram is of a male. The difference for females is that they would have two gonopores rather than one and they would be on the third pair of legs. Also, there would be ovaries in the place of testes, in approximately the same location.)

This image is for a marine crab, not a land crab. I'm not sure what all differs, but I know the gills do!

Unfortunately, a picture like this one doesn't exist for females :/

Wodesorel - After looking at dozens of pictures (both drawings and actual pictures) that show anatomy, all the information in this picture appears to be correct, except that the gills of the land hermit crab are modified for living outside of the water. They are still in the same location however.

The gills definitely do not look like that in a land crab. I did a necropsy on a jumbo a few years back. They run the length and height of the entire carapace.

Just did some more image searches, I was wrong.

I stand corrected on the gills, I apologize for that. I wish there was more research into hermit crabs, I've noticed lots of information (such as thorough diagrams) to be missing.

About the necropsy - I wish I had taken that opportunity during a recent PPS death that I had. I was too upset at the time, I thought of it afterwards. I'll do it next time (not hoping for it of course) and share the results.

I took a few photos. The smell of a recently dead crab is gag-rific, so I hurried through it as fast as I could.

I didn't really know what I was looking at, so there weren't any findings. Land hermits are poorly studied.
