Moving 40b to new home

Post by Gloaming » Sat Feb 21, 2015 3:02 pm

We're moving across town and are bringing the crabbies with us (of course). Problem is, we're not sure how to handle moving the 40 gallon breeder. There are six crabs in it at the moment, and I believe at least two are molting. I can transport the non-molters easily enough (it's a five-minute drive), but how on earth do we move the tank itself? Do we just put a piece of plywood under it?

Any advice is most welcome!

I highly recommend you take the crabs out and move the tank empty-ish. Takes the guesswork out of how to protect the entire tank's structure against shock, whether the crabs are being stressed, etc. You can prepare a super nice temporary tote tat to transport the crabs, filled with snuggly moss, warmed by socks full of dried beans, packed with interesting cubby spaces and sticks... It will give you a chance to check on your crabs and track their health through the move. I'm sure you will be able to slap the 40gb on a sturdy board and transport, platform style, in the back of a car (it's been done before) but moving a tat, intact, will restrict the use of your space and whatnot. Breaking it out will make things more manageable.

Is it ok then to dig up the molters? It's only a five minute drive, so I wasn't sure.

Many crabbers will dig them up, with multiple prepared ISOs at the ready. Hopefully that is something you can do, and hopefully you won't come across too many molters. Crabs spend most of their time underground just hanging around.
I just think it's more worth it to dig crabs up than to futz with a SUPER HEAVY and large-sized aquarium. You can use moss as the substrate during transport and it will be very lightweight and the crabs can get a 5minute cuddle :D
Now, if you have plenty of truck space and PLENTY of helping hands (and muscles) then you COULD just lift the tank by a sturdy board. But make sure that board is extra sturdy, and non slip, and you gotta pad it up after it goes in the truck, and make sure nothing falls on it, or bumps into it!

I just moved 10 minutes away with my 40 gallon. All I did was take the glass lid off and moved the tank with two people! We were both able to lift the tank, so no need to dig the crabs up in my opinion. I also don't use sand, making the tank lighter

See, that's kind of what I'd originally planned. I just wasn't sure if moving the tank would compromise the bottom. I use 50% sand, but maybe I'll scoop half of it out and hope the little guys down below are down deep.

Thanks!
