How do you Serve your Bugs?

Post by Asheka » Sun May 03, 2015 6:27 pm

This weekend (Monday Tuesday are my days off) I plan on getting some food prep started. I bought a can of crickets, and am wondering the best way to feed them to the crabs. Should they be chopped up? Crushed? Left whole?

I put dried crickets in whole. Same with mealworms and I also occasionally offer those live (in a dish they can't get out of but the crabs can get in). Those are the two insects I have the most. If I were to offer live crickets again, I'd offer freshly killed. I've also tried offering super worms (no go) and wax worms (they loved them). I can't remember if I've tried calciworms...

Thanks! I was thinking of crushing them and adding them to pureed stuffs for the "crabby cubes" lol It kinda grosses me out though.

I do both (serve whole and crush). Freeze-dried mealworms and crickets are mortar and pestled into a "chunky" powder to serve as the base of the crabs' dry mix. A few times a week, I'll toss a few whole ones into a half-egg shell for them to pull apart. Last week, Felix chased Marble away from the egg shell trove but Marble managed to scuttle backward still holding onto one of the whole mealworms  !

I never fuss - it goes into the tank however I get it, and they eat it up without trouble. :)

Thanks everyone. I'm probably going to crush some for cubes, but we'll see heh
