Herps Alive in Cleveland took in some hermits a couple months ago, and they still had two and were doing an adoption event this past Saturday about a half hour from me. (Instead of the nearly two hour drive to their main facility.) I contacted them and set up arrangements to adopt the crabs.
.... I was not really expecting to fall in love with a little gecko! We talked with the owner for a bit - we worked with him in January on an event at the local animal shelter - and that's when I noticed the little guy in a cup. He was missing his tail. And he was soooo sweet looking. And I had absolutely everything I needed for him already at home. And the adoption fee was only $25... so...
This is our new gecko. He's a 3.5 year old African Fat-Tailed Gecko. And I think his previous owners may have been neglecting him since he's underweight but has a super appetite.
He also dropped his tail at the rescue about a week ago. They said they fed him, walked past a few minutes later, and his tail was gone. No sign of regrowth yet. I don't know much about geckos to know if this is okay. He does this adorable little rump shudder whenever he seems food. And he comes up to the edge of the glass and looks down. I'm not used to my critters having such good spacial reasoning! And the moment he sees me moving he sticks his head out. (Probably thinking I have food for him.
) Yeah, I'm a little enamored of him.....
Missing his tail...
I finally found the perfect use for the driftwood from wolfnipplechips!!
Cage - it's a 15 gallon vintage slate-bottom. I'll probably upgrade him to a more natural looking 30 gallon breeder later this summer when I get stuff moved around. Don't have anything I can put an 18 inch wide tank on at the moment.
It works all well and good until the missing parts regenerate! 
I haven't had a chance to ask at my normal pet shop to see if it's something they have. I know they get in a lot of different geckos, but I can't say I've seen Fat Taileds there either. He's a big city gecko!
