I need pool help.

Post by KellyCrabbieLove » Tue Jul 07, 2015 3:53 pm

I have twin 2.5 gal pools in my tank. One sw and one fw. I went through 2 filters in the sw before realizing it was because they were getting fragged by the salt. I have just been changing that one myself. The fw filter died today. My husband thinks it is just the cheap plastic components inside. I bought the ones I did because they were small and meant for teeny tanks. I have looked and looked and looked and I can't figure out what I need. Will someone please please PLEASE help me figure this out. I use the ones that clip on the short side of the tank because anything inside would take up too much room with jumbo hermits. I need a link to exactly what I need to buy. Salt water safe too. I am apparently too dense to figure it out on my own. To make matters worse the water is cloudy in my fw now because I just replaced the gravel and the calcium is clouding up the water. Bah!

ETA- I snapped my ramp in half too after taking a huge chunk out of my custom glass lid. My husband fixed the glass silicone for the win. Not my day!

It's not you - it's the debris the crabs track it. It gets into the propeller and kills the motor. I don't think there is a way around it other then to buy cheap filters that can be replaced as needed.

Isn't the debris the same as in fish tanks? I am so bad at this. Lol

Nope. The crabs drag in all kinds of crap. Sand especially can kill a filter, ime. Then you got cocofiber, moss, food....

Oh come on filter companies! Get your stuff in order! We need a land hermit crab safe tank filter. I am totally calling a company tomorrow. Aqueon for sure. Any others I should pitch the idea to?

I've killed filters in my aquarium because I use sand. They can't handle sucking up hard particles. It scratches the magnet which spins the propeller (impeller?), which creates a drag on the motor causing it to run too hot, which causes it to die.

Hmm...this is where in real life I am swearing lol the pools have the crushed coral stuff for gravel which isn't that bad, just the stupid sand. It isn't bad enough that it is EVERYWHERE in my house lol Anyone have a work around for the problem? Even if I have to replace them frequently which should I get for these 2 tanks?

Aquaclear 20 seems to be viable. They have a two year warrenty to cover these issues and can have the flow turned down to super low for my teeny tanks. I am going to call them tomorrow and ask about saltwater compatibility and their thoughts on the sand in the motor problem.

You might want to check out Azoo Palms. They are really teeny, pack a punch, and are really inexpensive.

Yikes!

This is what my local shop has on their nano tank. It's been running for at least three years, but the price is sort of crazy for a crab tank: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... pid=108613

I wonder how well sponge filters would work for a crabitat pool?

Actually, that is what I am shopping for right now. I think I found one. I will link it tomorrow. It isn't on my phone. The filter company suggested it when I called. :)
