From a 29 Gallon to a 49 Gallon

Post by KayHasCrabs » Fri Jul 10, 2015 2:52 pm

I got a heck of a deal on Craigslist. A 49 Gallon bowfront tank with a nice stand for $50. The 29 Gallon was great but I was in the market for a more appealing set up, and maybe a potential home to another E in the future.

Here's the old tank. We live in Iowa, and my tank is kept on a four season porch. They get most their heat during the Summer from being out there, I didn't even have the heaters plugged in when I set it up this morning and the tank was reading a balmy 85.

Image

This is the new set up. Three bags of sand and one block of substrate and I still need a little bit more, but not much. The pic is a bit deceiving as there's about an 1 1/2 inches of extra depth at the bottom of the tank. I didn't realize I had bought one bag of white sand at our Menard's but I kind of like the different textures and think they might also. I also left it a bit drier on the end of the pools because spillage happens. But I may give it a really good douse as I'm trying to get the humidity up. The back underneath the 2nd level reads 87, but above, close to the top where I keep my Acurite it's 79 for humidity. I'll have to see how it does throughout the day. Excuse the mess on the floor, I cleaned after I was done taking pics, I swear!

This is the hut I built using a Dollar tree container, plenty of silicone, rocks from dollar tree, substrate, and some clippings from an older aquarium plant. (I saw someone on here did something like this so thank you for the idea.) It is over a shower caddy moss pit. Plenty of room on the sides to sit on the second level or to burrow down into the moss pit, and I figure the moss won't dry out as quick either. Suspected murderer is sitting on top there, two years ago I had six crabs. Now I only have five. Anyways, I mis-calculated the weight and the silicone holding my legs on the 2nd level broke, so had to add an extra leg to hold the weighty end up.

Coming down: They have their choice, a bird ladder wrapped in hemp or a Cholla Wood and fake ivy creation.

Pools: The pools work but I'm going to have to rethink their entry. I saw someone else on here used ceramic tile, but what I made seems like it might fall apart because of the humidity, and I need to figure out how to attach the plastic canvas. I'm thinking that I might make a ladder that fit's the width for both pools using hemp. I have bubblers for both. I wanted to keep the pools way above the sand level just because they bring a lot in anyways, and a couple used to love digging under or in between in the old tank.

I will have to see what winter brings us. We have a pellet stove out on the porch that we burn during the day so it stays pretty warm, an electric heater at night, but I will probably need to heat lamp the set up when temps run cooler and colder. Currently there's an Ultratherm 11x23 and a Large Zoo Med on the back of the tank. In insulated with foil and a piece of foam poster board. I also have to have a plexiglass top made for the tank, it has two piece glass with a 2 inch gap right now that I'm keeping plugged with just the light on top. I've done some looking but I don't think they make screen tops for these tanks so I'm not quite sure what to do yet.

Looks wonderful keep up the great work! For attaching the canvas you can take a thick pin such as a yarn sewing needle or something of that nature, on the outside rim on the pool you can poke a hole on each end to the desired width of the canvas and just sew it on. It holds the best. I have tried everything from hot glue to tank silicone and this works best on the containers. Everything else came off lol. :cheer:

That is a GENIUS idea. I don't have any needles that big so I'll have to pick one up, but that's great! I tried the fire thingy but those just ended up breaking off, or I didn't do it right. Thank you!

Love it! I especially love the way you've taken ordinary items and made something so beautiful! Room to climb, burrow, climb, and burrow some more...ah, what a life.

Yw ^.^, Yea had to come up with a few things that I had laying around the house as well lol. It is usually soft plastic so a drill would just break it. I found that a baby safety pin worked great but be careful with it cause it can slide. Once in, just lightly move the needle in a circle motion to smooth the sides an make the hole as big as you would like it to be. Then you can tread it together and tie it on. Makes things a lot easier and stable then the glue did. Also easy if you have to change the canvas cause all you have to do is cut/replace the canvas and thread.

They do have the life, and they rolled popcorn all over last night. :)

I thought the sand looked neat too, but I'm really liking the white sand so I'm thinking I might move some more out into the middle a bit.

I'm thinking that when I do it, I'm going to go ahead and double up on the containers, sew the canvas on the top one, that way I can reduce the chance of flooding. I've done some reading here and there and it seems that some have had cracks pop up and flood their tanks? Did you use heavier duty containers? I just used Glad Freezer throwaways.

I use the heavier containers. You know the little tote containers? I got mine at walmart where the big totes are. They were pretty cheap also. They are nice and clear and can see into them perfectly. Tho I may change them for the Fighter fish tanks once they go into their new tat. They have bigger square ones that are wider and deeper than any of the totes for about the same price. If you are interested you could check them out too :). They have many different sizes and shapes in those. That way they are built as tanks so you know they will hold up. I haven't had an issue with the totes yet other that the tank sealant just refuses to stay on them for long .
