Is the collar rubbing? Is the skin red and irritated or just hairless? Is he losing hair all over or just in that spot? Is he itchy?I was a veterinary assistant for many years and now am the hospital manager of one.

It definitely sounds like a local irritation in that area. Pin pricks can be a sign of a secondary skin infection - usually from the scratching or inflammation the skin's immunity in that area is weakened allowing bacteria to do their thing. I would do an antibiotic ointment with the cortisone - you could even mix the two. If it gets worse or doesn't improve in a week I would probably be making an appointment with a vet.I love Trifexis!

at times we had dogs that would drink and water would dribble down then being wet all the time the collar would cause them infection, this was mostly our outside dog though

I'm housesitting at the moment and we're looking after a Border Collie along with the house (plus 4 cats, 5 chickens, and 13 sheep. lol) He keeps chewing on his fur, or biting it out almost. Have checked for fleas and ticks and cant see any at all. Do you think he's missing his owners or stressed out or something? He seems a little out of sorts today but this is the third time we've house-sat and he's never been like this before. Kinda worried, don't particularly want a depressed pooch on my hands, he's making me sad too!
Looking for my first Hermies! HELP!! It's considerably harder to get started than I expected!

If he is biting one spot it could be some kind of local irritation. If he is biting all over it could be an allergy or fleas. If he is not on flea control he could still be getting bitten even if you don't see any if he was allergic to the flea bites he would be very itchy. Either way he can make the problem worse. His licking will cause damage to the area and that, with the constant moisture can cause skin infection. Stopping him from chewing is the goal. If he is chewing all over, you can do Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at 1mg/lb = 2.2mg/kg. It usually comes in 25mg tablets here in the states. It's a very safe medication - just make sure it doesn't have any other medications in it. May cause drowsiness. If it is localized you could even try a cortisone cream. Try applying before he eats or before walking him so he doesn't just lick it off right away.He could also be chewing if something inside hurts. For example, a dog with arthritis or a sprain might lick the area that hurts. If that is going on he might need a vet to assess him and prescribe meds to help.

So on the Benadryl is that given once a day or several times? My dog itches too and I am starting to think it might be allergies, but usually her belly isn't red and irritated like you would think since its low to the ground (she is a corgi). She itches the top of where her tail should be all the time, but I don't see any fleas and she gets flea treatments. What is trifexis? I've never heard of it.

What kind of flea control are you using? Tail is the most common spot for flea itch. Could be full anal glands too. Benadryl can be given every 8-12 hrs
