Live plants

Post by Kirrie » Mon Aug 05, 2013 8:03 am

I prefer to use live plants in my freshwater aquariums over plastic, so I was wondering if there are any live plants that could be grown in a hermit crab tank with eco earth substrate. If possible, where could I find them?

Here is a link I use to keep track of what plants are safe. You can check the food list in the Zoea section, too.http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/pages/plants.htm

Because we use salt water to dampen our substrate and we have an open pool of saltwater in the enclosure live plants tend to wilt and die relatively quickly as there are not many readily available salt tolerant live plants on the market. You'll also want to consider the fact that the hermitcrabs will basically destroy any live plant you put in with them by eating on it, up rooting it and stripping it of all leaves and skin.More than half of us here only use fake plants because they are easier to replace when damamged and unlike live plants its hard to find a fake plant that is toxic to hermitcrabs.

It's true. I suppose there is a forum of plant-lovers out there talking about the horrors of the hermit crab terrarium. Poor plants!

I put in a lucky bamboo once and within 3 hours a big crab snipped it clean off at the base.Probably was a good thing though since I later found out that lucky bamboo isn't actually bamboo and is harmful to crabs if eaten.
