Favorite / Least favorite food
Re: Favorite / Least favorite food
Good idea for local farmers for honey comb!
I agree with callalily. My crabs might love something one day and not touch it the next.
If I offer something a lot they tend to get bred with it. So I try to switch it up.
Apples tend to be a good one. HCP popcorn mixes and powdered honey and powdered pineapple, are a hit. Dried or fresh coconut (which is fun to give but there is so much u have to freeze some!) scrambled eggs, fish.
One day I grabbed a bunch of ferns and maple leaves from outside- they were in love!
I usually mix peanut butter and honey, which is a win.

Ryry, I have been trying to source powdered honey for a while now, but have been unable to find pure, no-sugars added powdered honey. Is yours pure honey or is it a sugars added blend?

Oak Leaves and Oak bark.Leaves and bark are a staple for crabs in the wild. Carol gave her 35 +yr. old crabs a leaf a day.

Re: Favorite / Least favorite food
As of today, popcorn is a new favorite. Put two pieces in the 'tat last night. This morning, one was gone. I discovered Ludwig hugging it to him in the tank. Let me just say, my crab doesn't ever come out/ is awake in the morning. This was weird. He then proceeded to hide in the coconut hut, w/ his prized popcorn. Again, this is weird, as he very rarely uses the hide.
Try popcorn. Seriously.

All of my guys absolutely loooove popcorn. Whoever gets to the dish first literally guards all four pieces (one for each crab) so there's always a tussle when the next crab comes up for his share .JulesRolyCrab wrote:As of today, popcorn is a new favorite. Their favorites would be peanut butter, honey, coconut, shrimp, moss, and earthworms.
They consistently do not eat lettuce, bread, or raw hamburger. I continue to offer them from time to time because you just never know when they will change their mind.

I have tried over and over to get my guys to eat fresh shrimp. I buy them the fancy organic shrimp and they will not go near it. It is so annoying! Yesterday I bought them one scallop. They are chowing down on it like I have never fed them.

Was the shrimp partly or fully cooked? You know sometimes the frozen ones you buy at the stores are pre-cooked and most fish/crabs will not eat them.CrabbyCakes wrote:I have tried over and over to get my guys to eat fresh shrimp. Raw. They will not go near them. It is so strange. It is a real burn because they are fancy and expensive. Apparently my crabs do not have a taste for the finer thingspurpletiger wrote:Was the shrimp partly or fully cooked? My like deer meat. Can't you just now see the hermit crab big enough to take down a deer.

Mine adore nasturtiums, popcorn, apple slices, pecans, bee pollen, honey (treat). And autumnal (red) white oak leaves.
I have yet to find an animal protein that they adore. Tuna, beef, chicken, salmon, catfish, fresh or cooked shrimp, and freeze-dried brine shrimp are all hit or miss. I should try egg.
They will not touch dried mealworms. And I think they were offended when I gave them a lagostino tail.

Re: Favorite / Least favorite food
I have always had really picky eaters!
I have no luck with a lot of food I give my hermit crabs.
I don't go shopping for them specifically so anything they are offered is very basic food. I currently have a clementine cut up in there for awhile now (still fresh) and not one hermie shows interest.
They stick their noses up to peanut better as well and one time I even put tuna in and my hermit crabs didn't touch it! Since this is a new group of hermies I may try the tuna fish again.
I am waiting for my new delivery to come in with home made hermie food samples!!! I did catch little Blue Sioux eating the tea leaves the other day though so that's one win!
