kay_blahh wrote:Our crabs eat what we eat. All organic fresh fruits, veggies and nuts. Usually every time I eat something, I throw a little piece of what I'm having in their dish. The only food I buy specifically for them is dried shrimp and they love that. They usually always have oats or flax seed in there too. For some reason I cant get them to tear into any sort of leaves (I've tried romaine, spinach, radicchio, arugula). Nothing. However, I've pretty much experimented with everything and they will eat anything else I give them. Their favorite thing in the world could possibly be grapes & raisins (they are the first to go).

Beets! I love them and so do "Mitch" and "Gabe" and its an incredible colorant!!!! Incredible how fast they both gained a little bit of a more purple tint a day after eating them. It would be super awesome if someone would recreate my experiment and share their findings!!!

I'm shocked at the prices people are paying for food! A tub of organic oats from Whole Foods is $3 and some change. Best advice I can give is adopt a healthy lifestyle and you will rarely ever have to go out of your way to feed your hermies... You will feel better too!
Beets!! I hate beets, but im food shopping tomorrow and I'm getting them beets. I'll give it a shot.

Your feeding plan sounds just like mine, as I'm cooking dinner or eating whatever I put aside little pieces for them and give them fresh scraps of whatever we eat. My daughter left a half squashed grape in her lunch, into the crab dish it goes! Someone was asking me once about what they eat and I told her, her response was "wow, if you keep feeding them like THAT you'll have them forever!", as if that was a bad thing. Keeping them alive for a long time...isn't that the point??

Really wish we had a place to buy organic. Maybe I'm just missing it.

I have a pp who is EXTREMELY picky, I tried to give her fresh foods and she won't touch them. Once she took a bite of apple then walked away dissatisfied. I bought some food from the hermit crabs patch which people say is devoured in 30 minutes but nope she didn't like it, although I got some sweet claws popcorn treat and she LOVED it. So I just sprinkle it on the other foods and she will eat anything that has the treat on it, funny crab, she can be such a handful. I have a huge shipment of foods coming so hopefully I'll have luck

Maybe its a location thing but the Walmart by me has a lot of organic options. Maybe try looking into the Walmart in your area?

I really hate letting food go to waste! I wish I could start a compost pile but we live in an apartment for the time being so that's impossible right now. I love that they will eat the carrot and beet ends I usually would chop away... potato scraps... the peels of most fruits and veggies.. and of course the squashed grapes at the bottom of the bag! They are our little garbage disposals
