What are your crabs up to?
Re: What are your crabs up to?
My tanks is the most active it's ever been, I just had three of 6 molters come up from their first molt and they've all been changing shells almost daily it's quite exciting! It's 2 am here and I went to check on them out of curiosity as I heard then making a bit of noise. I was surprised to see three of them all in the shell shop at once. I thought it was pretty awesome as I imagined them all socializing and talking about shells. I wanted to get a picture but I could tell I was already disturbing then as they're all still getting used to me. Do any of your crabs group shop? Any of you have interesting shell shop stories to share?

When I read "just bangin around" my first thought was of a crab shaking its behind causing the shell to clank against other objects bahahahahaJamieL wrote:Yesterday at work I texted my husband and asked him to check the tank stats, and after he gave me the numbers I asked what the one topside crab was doing. He said "he's just banging around in there." (He was trying to wedge himself in a tiny space between a water pool and the coconut hide.) I thought what a perfect description of his behavior, just bangin around

Bought a piece of Cholla wood and added leafy circlets above them for hiding spaces at the top of a tiring climb two nights ago. Last night zelda figured it out (:

And one little guy under the substrate. How long is too long? Can the dreaded scent of fish in the tank climb through the substrate? I'm starting to worry but I don't want to go digging just in case I end up bothering him...

Went to turn on the tank light this morning to find a toppled over moss pit. Baby was chilling in the moss pit underneath it (that's supposed to support it) no doubt the crab that broke the moss pits suction (they're my biggest) and three other active crabbies I may need to rethink my decor arrangement when my other big crabs come topside! All the maintenance oh my.

Ooh, I saw those "wreaths" (candle rings, maybe?) at Joann's the other day and was wondering what would be a good use for them, great idea! What size is your corner shower basket? I used a coupon to get one at Bed/Bath/Beyond but it looks enormous in my current tank, so I didn't put it in there.DarthKrab wrote:Bought a piece of Cholla wood and added leafy circlets above them for hiding spaces at the top of a tiring climb two nights ago. With everyone but Junior down, I decided to spruce up the 20 gallon so he'd have more to do than eat and hide in his same spots all day. Wouldn't you know he used the fishnet and vines to make a beeline for the screen lid. He's currently ignoring the new moss pit, cholla and lovely foliage in favor of traversing the entire 300 square inches of screen lid upside down, LOL. He's getting a workout, too, dragging his big horse conch with him. I hope he finds a way down because I'm going to bed!

Yeah, my shower thing is pretty big. I wasn't sure it would fit at first but it did so I think you should go for it hahaha (:hprmom wrote:Ooh, I saw those "wreaths" (candle rings, maybe?) at Joann's the other day and was wondering what would be a good use for them, great idea! Mine has been down a solid week now since I transferred & "remodeled" his new tank. I think I have seen signs of tunneling & digging when I get up in the mornings, fresh upturned sub or a trail/two here & there.Boshia wrote:I wish I could say mine were up to something, but all of them have been down either molting or destressing . Can't wait until they resurface so I can move them to their bigger home!
Wish he would get more active so I could catch a glimpse of him!!he's driving me crazy!

How did you place the cashew in? Chopped up or a whole half?cewilson1006 wrote:I'm experimenting with different foods to see what the crabs like best. Sunday, they had carrot puree, dried shrimp, a bit of powdered calcium supplement and I tossed in half a cashew for the heck of it. The cashew was gone the next day but I wasn't sure what happened since only one of my crabs is really up and active right now. Well it turns out, Mr. Up and Active (Comet) was hoarding the cashew in his favorite hiding spot. When one of the little guys came up and tried to check it out there was a bit of posturing but no fighting. Comet finished the entire thing by himself in 2 days. None of his tank-mates had the chance to even try it so of course, I've added more to the food dish so everyone gets a chance although I wouldn't be surprised to find a stash of them hidden near the UTH where Comet likes to hang out.

This is adorable!!! It is a little guy in his shell hanging out in a huge shell, right?
I just discovered this thread. Almost all of my crabs are under, either molting or destressing so I am really missing them. I am really enjoying the stories. Maybe they will help me be more patient as I wait. Our first two crabs have been down the longest so am hoping our biggest guy comes up soon. It's been 8 weeks!!

Whenever I see these kinds of pictures I always imagine them running up the ladder or climbing whatever obstacle like a champ even though they were probably just hanging out there. Lol I always find my crabs hanging off a piece of wood or in a little crater they dug to hang out in

@DarthKrab I get excited whenever I see one of my crabs on it since they NEVER USE IT! I even glued in extra rungs to encourage them to go on it. This must be a very small fraction of what my Father felt when he built me a play house and I was too scared of caterpillars to play in it.
