I also have one in ( more or less ) similar coloration like the blueberry above - previously in darker purple, but became lighter after molting.

I'm sure this hermit crab below is a C.rugosus; not a C.purpureus - see the claw shape, the ridges, and the shield leg.

No, it is C. purpureus.

See the other photo come out form the shell. C. purpureus also have the ridges, no black do under eye.

C.rugosus do have black dot under eye, and shield leg is flatten , big claw as four-cornered in an external form.

Let me take a closer look & zoom it out ...
Yes ... from the frontal shot it looks like a C.purpureus. You're correct, it's a C.purpureus.

I also had similar hermit crab here - a fully grown ruggie that has reached the size of medium strawberries or blueberries. Some C.rugosus do not have any black "tears" or eye-smudge under the eyestalks.

To all crab lovers.

I want to see, that most of you have bought C.purpureus and think they are C.purpureus from Japan.

I need to tell you Japan's C.purpureus is forbidden to export to other country.

So, C.purpureus that you keep are most likely the C.purpureus from Indonesia.

They are really like C.purpureus in Japan, but have something different.

Think about that and ask your supplier if you have spend many money to buy them.
